Naked Neck/Turken Thread

Has anyone else's hens slowed down on their laying? The heat here is getting to them I think. They suddenly slowed down in the last 2/3 weeks when the temps started getting very hot. We've been having some triple digit temps.

They're calling for lower temps come about Wednesday thru the weekend. Low 90's most likely.

Sorry I had to edit. I caught a spelling mistake. One that really bothers me there, their and they're.

I've actually been really lucky as the only pullets of mine that slowed were the broody ones. I have seven pullets in my "layer flock", four NNs that are not broody right now, and a White Rock that laid her first egg yesterday. I literally got a dozen eggs yesterday, though that one ounce pullet egg barely counted.

On my worst day so far this summer I only got eight eggs.

It was 102 here yesterday, but I also have gone to great lengths to keep my birds cool. My NN run is equipped with misters, my layer flock gets chilled fruit for a treat, and my cabin with my Biels, which are NOT heat tolerant, is equipped with both a swamp cooler and a portable A/C unit that I direct at birds that seem to be on the verge of heat stroke. Plus I give them frozen 2-liter bottles to lay against and hose down the ground throughout the day so they can scratch and "mud bathe" as they please.

My coop please excuse the mess I'm still working on painting it :-) couple of my girls thought they needed to help

Sex Link Question : All you Naked Neck Lovers..Is it Likely to get an Sex link NN ? I'm thinking the NN gene will be stronger then the Sex Link one. which Breed would be better..

I'd be very surprised if a majority of NNs that come out of most /all hatcheries weren't the result of strong 'sex-link' genetics.

Found a dead hen today. Apparently it's just been to hot for her. Never got an egg from her so I don't have any chicks nor will I ever get any chicks from her. She was right at a year old and one of my mottling carriers. A loss for the Calico NN's I'm shooting for.

I started adding electrolytes to my chicken's water. It also has added vitamins. Eggs started picking up again. And, they are much bigger than before I added the powder to the water.

I hope you don't have preditors. I have to use hardware cloth on my coop. Too many bears, coyotes, raccoons and possums.. The last two of these will reach right into chicken wire and pull the chickens neck out and eat it off. Especially at night when the chickens are in their night daze.

Sorry to hear about that loss. It's finally cooled down around here, especially in the evening...a light jacket would feel very good outside right now but I'm not complaining. These Chanteclers worry me a bit in hot weather because this is the first time we've had such a well insulated bird and we really don't know what to expect of them in extremely hot weather...(rare here but it does come once in a while).

I hope you can get a bird to replace the loss...

That's a Bummer!

Thanks.

I'm going to do a fall hatch. Will set on the 3rd of September. That us if I am still getting eggs.

I'm going to sell down sons if the Medford hens in the fall also so I don't have to feed them through the winter. Probably some of the older roosters also. I'll be keep tge mottled carriers for breeding. I only have one Aloha pullet and one Aloha NN pullet left from the Aloha hatch. I've hot 4 Aloha cockerels and one Aloha NN cockerel. So they'll go in with the majority of the hens.

I'm trying to hatch a few more pullets for tge spring season. My last hatch if 17 produced 10 cockerels and 7 pullets.
