Naked Neck/Turken Thread

I don;t have to tell you they make such sweet babies, right!  ;)

btw three of them came from a scsc roo- totally natural breeding! and either a hen with no signs on leg and one hen with just a small patch by the hock joint.

The fourth one is either from carrier parents or the one scsc roo in that pen- two roosters, something like 20 hens.

Thanks Kev. I've dropped in just to see if I can find a decent egg layer with early meat possibilities. I've hatched some Altsteirer and unknown to me apparently some SFH on the NY HAL. I just don't know if either of them are as good as the NN. Do the NN with the lack of feather put their energy into meat production?

The Altsteirer is supposed to be a good dual purpose bird. Not as big as NN which I'm ok with if they really lay as well as they say they should. There just three of us here now so a large chicken isn't necessary. I do like butchering at three to four months for best results. My project birds give good meat just not eggs.

If he's pure for pea comb, then all of his chicks will be pea combed out of cross with bcm. Also rumpless is dominant.. those two traits would help with identifying his chicks.

The color would strongly bcm in the chicks, but some will have more color from him. Just ignore the color and check the combs and tails.. you';re good I think..
thank you.

he is pure araucana so must be pure for pea comb. I have an araucana/silkie cross and she has a tail (her dad was araucana). but pea comb would be a sign.

for how long can my pullet be fertile from 1 mating? I don't have incubator and it seems my muscovie duck stopped laying without becoming broody (I wanted to use her to hatch chicks).

The two together do look like a boy/girl pair by the size difference.. but maybe it's variation as many broiler stock will throw very varying weights if crossed with non-broilers.

However the dark feathers coming on the bigger one's breasts do seem to be early rooster colors coming in... I'm guessing they may be wheaten or like Apoc.
the bigger chick has a 5kg mom and the smallers mom is 3 kg.

the base of bigger chick's feathers is blue and it is getting more dark feathers all over the body. it is wattles and feet that make me think it is a boy. although it's mom had big feet and wattles as a chick. it seems I have to be patient with this mystery chick. every morning I think it is a pullet and by the end of the day I think it is a cockerel, lol.

Hey good birds are good birds no matter where they come from.
I'm really glad that you've have good experience with Ideal, I really am.

I'm planning on a NN order probably next year if things go right , (Cackle) seeing if I can get more of those mottled birds. To it won't hurt to get more if the red/buff birds slso. That is if I can't get eggs from someone close.

I may want to try the Cackle birds some day if I want more "blood".

I also want to add @Fire Ant Farm . Go project on those NN. You'll have a lot of fun with that.

Projects are what keeps me going with my chickens.
Oh yeah, I have two incubators now and am totally going project!!!!

I actually haven't yet gotten rid of the Speckled Sussex. I looked at them today, and I SWEAR they doubled in size overnight or something. Late growth spurt? Anyhow, I'll give them a little more time. (They're starting to outgrow their little kit coop, so I need to get them new digs.) I'm planning to put them with Tank to see if I can get any mottling out of them. Two have a LOT of white mottling (other three are more subtle). They are SUCH houdinis! I have to catch them about 3 times a day.
Wow 100 too bad everyone isn't closer we could share. Cackle chicks are available on February 8 for now. Ideal on 5-2 for now. S&G shows sold out. Sent them an email just out of curiosity.

I'm finally getting eggs starting back up. Not the Orpington's though. Maybe I'm expecting too much from them. All I read was 6-8 months for eggs and they love the months of October to March to lay. Well they missed the memo. Right now they are 9 months pushing 10 on the 7 of February. The Trader Joe hens are starting now even they are older than they were supposed to start. Hatched 8-9-15. Liking them. 7 eggs 3 hens 4 days not a bad late start.

Now that you have got my interest in the fountain pens I've looked them up at Woodcrafters and while the kits are a little more than the ball points it's doable.
We actually all VERY seriously considered a combo order with some of us making a road trip for chick pick up. But I think we lost enthusiasm when it seemed like so much work for what was ultimately an unknown quantity. I emailed them last year and asked whether I could get a smaller order if I drove for pick up. It seemed like they would consider it...

(Sorry to have made your pen math worse.

Yeah but now I cringe about the times I spoke of hatchery stock NN retaining the meat part of dual purpose more than other hatchery breeds...

I know this really sounds like 'in the good old days.....' the hatchery NN were coming out heavier back then. Still decent/good layers but very meaty, it was obvious handling a NN vs a barred rock or RIR. So far the pullets are looking to grow out smaller than my largefowl "NN mutts"..

Definitely keep Snape to bring the weights back up.

Oh yes I remember her... that was my bird..

The Germans also have very pleasing type, I think. I wonder if anyone has used them for improving on type or for show reasons?

Any of your NN besides Snape would be a good cross for a start on the blr pattern. Give a preference to the darker red birds if possible if you're not interested in gold laces. The dark red needs several genes that encourage more and deeper red pigments.

I'm one of them! :(
I bet that it may just be that the "slow decline" in hatchery stock is later coming for NNs than the other breeds. But there were still nice weights and body types in my birds. Snape is maturing so nicely. He is appropriately protective of the girls, getting better with his "technique" (though he still has some learning to do), and really is a big broad beast. They still prefer to sleep in a pig pile rather than roost, and he's so much bigger, the girls all burrow under him and he keeps them warm like a broody would. His rose comb is a bit of a lopsided mess of a thing, like he's wearing a hat slightly cocked to one side - good thing I don't care!

So that was your bird! She was so gorgeous - I BLAME YOU FOR MY CHICKEN MATH!!!!!!

:::ahem:::
So you're saying I should cross RLBW pullets/hens with Tank (or future boy like him), or cross RLBW cockerel/rooster with Sweetie? I'm getting these from Eight Acre Farm (Luane). I hear fantastic things about her birds, which is why I'm getting these. Original plan was the NHs and the BCMs, but there is a 20 chick minimum, hence the "add ons". (Of course, now it's 25...

One of these days I'm just going to either drive to S&G or order 100 and figure out what to do with the ones I can't manage... (e.g., find someone else who wants NN chicks around here...)

No problem on the math for pens. I need to dust off the equipment anyways. Besides it will give me excuse to visit a friend who does the foundation pens as well as lots of other turned crafts.
Your right on not really knowing the outcome of S&G chicks. It sounds like your group still has the large blood surviving.

If you get 100, you can have a 'neck-ringing-clinic' and put some chicken in the freezer!!!

Could also be a good time to practice making capons.

The world is now 12 Naked Necks richer!

Out if 13 eggs that went into lockdown and hatched yesterday 12 have hatched.

5 from my Columbian/Cinnamon rooster out of EE/NN cross hens.
7 from my Spangled Aloha rooster out of red and barred NN hens and yes all seven are NN. So I guess that means my hens were pure for the NN gene. It does look like any will be spangled/mottled, but time will tell if the hens carry the mottled gene.

Pictures will follow tomorrow.
