I may want to try the Cackle birds some day if I want more "blood".
Oh yeah, I have two incubators now and am totally going project!!!!

I actually haven't yet gotten rid of the Speckled Sussex. I looked at them today, and I SWEAR they doubled in size overnight or something. Late growth spurt? Anyhow, I'll give them a little more time. (They're starting to outgrow their little kit coop, so I need to get them new digs.) I'm planning to put them with Tank to see if I can get any mottling out of them. Two have a LOT of white mottling (other three are more subtle). They are SUCH houdinis! I have to catch them about 3 times a day.
We actually all VERY seriously considered a combo order with some of us making a road trip for chick pick up. But I think we lost enthusiasm when it seemed like so much work for what was ultimately an unknown quantity. I emailed them last year and asked whether I could get a smaller order if I drove for pick up. It seemed like they would consider it...
(Sorry to have made your pen math worse.

)
I bet that it may just be that the "slow decline" in hatchery stock is later coming for NNs than the other breeds. But there were still nice weights and body types in my birds. Snape is maturing so nicely. He is appropriately protective of the girls, getting better with his "technique" (though he still has some learning to do), and really is a big broad beast. They still prefer to sleep in a pig pile rather than roost, and he's so much bigger, the girls all burrow under him and he keeps them warm like a broody would. His rose comb is a bit of a lopsided mess of a thing, like he's wearing a hat slightly cocked to one side - good thing I don't care!
So that was your bird! She was so gorgeous - I BLAME YOU FOR MY CHICKEN MATH!!!!!!
:::ahem:::
So you're saying I should cross RLBW pullets/hens with Tank (or future boy like him), or cross RLBW cockerel/rooster with Sweetie?
I'm getting these from Eight Acre Farm (Luane). I hear fantastic things about her birds, which is why I'm getting these. Original
plan was the NHs and the BCMs, but there is a 20 chick minimum, hence the "add ons". (Of course, now it's 25...
)
One of these days I'm just going to either drive to S&G or order 100 and figure out what to do with the ones I can't manage... (e.g., find someone else who wants NN chicks around here...)
