Naked Neck/Turken Thread

Oh, well do you know why that is?

And I totally agree! Last time I used a broody, I have all 13 eggs hatch!

As @chickengr indicated, humidity needs are the prevailing theory, but I also know of some people who claim that temperature requirements are different too. If you ever peruse the Biel thread you'll see that most people seem have difficulties hatching Biel eggs not matter what method they choose.

The little flock that Bellatrix ( your eventual black NN) is part of had included two fertile Biel eggs that fizzled when they were fully developed, and they were under one of my broodies. Granted, she was a first timer and not the best mother overall, but given all the problems with the eggs I just think it's a breed issue. From now on, if I want to hatch any of my Biel eggs I have one very skilled White Rock who's given me outstanding hatches and has proven to be an exceptional mother. She's the one who hatched my two Biel/NN mixes as well as Biel/Australorp, Biel/Silkie and Biel/Ameraucana mixes. The girl's good!

it seems that different breeds need different humidity. if you have a biel broody put her eggs and fingers crossed. just an idea.

My Biels have never gone broody, but my Biel mixes have. I think the trait is in there somewhere, but it's a little hard to bring out in the Biels. I don't know of too many Biel owners who've gotten broody girls from the breed...at least, not here in the states.

my muscovie drake died. he would be 1 year old in september. it was some respiratory issue. my NN aniela is still sneezing. I wonder if I have IB in my flock again. can ducks get IB? the 6 ducks are ok at the moment.

Well I got some pictures, but not really good ones.

All three shots are the same cockerel.
He is black but has dark red feathers coming in on his wings. I supposing that he'll turn out to be a Red Birchrn like daddy.

A red Birchen. By a Silver Barred NN ( Black Sex Link) out of a Black Crossbred hen that wax1/2 Black Jersey Giant.

The above is out of a Black NN hen who is 1/2 Black Jersey Giant.

This makes this cockerel a 3/8 Jersey Giant.

@Kev
Would this rooster work for breeding to the White hens to produce White and solid black NN's?

I am new to this thread, but I LOVE naked necks! I had six a few years ago and they were so friendly, great layers, and didn't mind the Alaska weather at all. I moved and gave them a new home and now I have one naked neck with 14 other chickens. I think the naked neck was the cutest chick! She is still very sweet and she is my champion layer! She lays 6 eggs a week (starting at 18 weeks old!) and some of my other hens haven't even started yet. My husband was right when he said we should have gotten all naked necks!

The roosters like her the best, too. I am considering letting her hatch some of her eggs next spring. Has anyone tried crossing Naked Necks and Blue Andalusians or Silver-spangled Hamburgs? Is the naked neck trait dominant?

she looks exactly like my choco!

naked neck trait is dominant but she is not pure NN so some of her chicks will be fully feathered.

Look what I woke up to this morning:

It came from Cocoa Puffs egg, and sincie the chick is grey, I'm guessing that Heisenberg is the father?
