Neighbor threatening me and another neighbor about chickens

I'm going to warn you at night you should lock your chicken coop(s) I have heard WAY to many stories of chickens being killed at night.

Agreed on the documentation, but it really wouldn't matter if she lies. She would be liable for treble damages if her dog causes any harm and the owner of the livestock has the right to shoot the dog even for just "worrying" her animals.

347.17 KILLING DOGS IN CERTAIN CASES

347.03 DOGS MAY BE KILLED

561.09 OWNER OF ANIMALS LIABLE FOR TRESPASS

Wont the consequences be more severe if she can prove the chickens were purposefully killed? This is what I was trying to say. If she has documentation that the neighbor purposefully used the dog as a "weapon" to kill her chickens it seems like the neighbor would face more serious charges.

Why do people do that? Move to the country then complain about what they find there? Drives me NUTS!!

I live in the country, in a HORSE community no less. There are probably 20 horses on my road.... and two neighbors who HATE horses.
My old mare got out one day several years ago, a big limb fell over the fence. This man saw her, called animal control and reported that my horse was loose.
By the time AC got here, I had her back up where she belonged, with the limb removed and fence fixed, had gone to several neighbors and apologized, including this particular guy. Not that Ginger had caused any damage, but you know, I just wanted to let them know that she wasn't out intentionally and what had happened that had allowed her to get out.
Well, AC arrived, interviewed the guy, and he told the officer that he HATED horses with a passion, they stink, they're annoying and people who own them are rednecks with an aversion to progress.
Yep, all of that was clearly stated on the report.
The AC officer asked him WHY did you move to a horse community if you hate horses?

His response: I got such a good deal on the house, I just couldn't pass it up.

The AC officer was very nice and told me the guy was just trying to cause trouble. As long as the horse didn't cause any damage when it got out, there was nothing they could do.

Well, a couple days later, I'm out in the pasture, brushing the old girl, and I see that she's got something shinny on her coat. I get to looking and trying to figure out what it is.... it's BB's!!

Apparently when the guy saw her in his yard, he began shooting her with BB's to get her out.
I picked over 50 BB's out of her left side over a two week period, as they worked themselves out. I called AC and reported it. The same officer came out, but unfortunately since I didn't SEE him do it, there was nothing they could do. They went out and had a word with the man, who said he had a right to defend his property from the "beast". The AC officer informed him of the severity of animal cruelty charges and informed him that if the horse hadn't attacked them, wounded someone or damaged his property, and as long as the owner of the horse was aware that the horse was out, unintentionally and had her caught and confined to her appropriate area in a timely manner, and offered to pay for any damage she caused, that he couldn't justify shooting her. Now, if she were aggressive and caused trouble, then he'd have a right to defend himself and his property, or if she were out regularly and her owner had no intention to remedy the issue then there would be further steps that could be taken.

I could totally understand if something bad had happened, but seriously, she was out for less than 20 minutes.

And the other neighbor who hates horses is just as bad.... but for some reason his wife is always wanting to be friendly and chattie and such.

Our county ordinance allows livestock. We live in a horse community. It's very obvious, as you drive down the road that there are horses and various livestock in the neighborhood. If you don't like it, don't move here!!!

If I were you, I'd go out and get a couple roosters, offer her some fresh eggs and a copy of the ordinance that states the requirements and limitations for owning livestock and sit back and wait for the fun to commence.

This neighbor sounds like she would be horrified and embarassed if other people knew what she had told u Nicolle01. I would print off this thread and give it to to look over! Maye she will see the err of her ways and stop acting like she can run ur land! Good luck! Keep us updated on what happens!!

If it's just the wife who is exhibiting this grossly over-reactive and bizarre behavior, can you approach the husband separately when he's out in the yard or getting the newspaper? Act like you're confiding in him and ask his advice about your concerns that she seems unbalanced and under a great deal of stress, and that's she's projecting that on you and your family. And that you're seriously concerned about your safety and that of your chickens, and how about we keep the authorities out of this and not allow it to escalate, and how you're perfectly within your rights to keep chickens and not be threatened by her dog, etc., etc.

Otherwise, I agree with everyone else who has suggested you document everything and protect what's yours. Good luck with this wacko, and I'm sorry you have to have such a jerk neighbor.

She has NO right to put her animal in your yard! What the heck is she doing in an area with SO much land, where animals are allowed, if she hates them??? If you are allowed chickens and roosters, you are ALLOWED chickens and roosters! You can call the cops on her threats! She has NO right to dictate what you have and do just because she isn't getting laid....LOL... Anyway! Have your gun handy! Protect what is yours! If she calls the cops and you are in the right, they will laugh at her, you can't get a ticket for doing nothing wrong, not even a noise issue if roosters are allowed! Good luck!!!

I agree about making a report to Police. That should absolutely be documented. That is a clear threat to what amounts to your property and she has no right to make such threats.

I also agree with trying to make peace but you musn't let yourself be bullied like that. Unfortunately, people like that usually only understand one language and that is the one spoken by law enforcement.

Don't go out of your way to do anything except shoot the dog. Don't tell anyone, throw it in the back of your truck and haul it off. That ends that.

I believe you said you and the neighbor used to get along. That's because you were so accomadating to her wishes, she had nothing to be-ach about. You were doing all the work toward friendship, she was just taking advantage of your good nature. She 'does have problems,' maybe she is off her medication. Who knows but, she have proven she is unworthy of any friendship. You can't save everyone - just cross her off your list entirely.
