We had to put Fried Rice down today.

For the past week, she's been sleeping in the nesting boxes. I didn't think anything of it, because those are so warm with the straw. Kung Pao has been cuddling up beside her. Last night, I put my hand in there as I locked up the chickens and it was toasty. Anyway, this morning she didn't come outside with the others. I put my hand under her to check for duck eggs, thinking maybe she was broody or just trying to lay, and she toppled on her side. So I brought her in (she fought a bit) and ran her a warm bath in the sink, thinking she was egg-bound and I had to act fast. But as I let her soak in the warm water, I noticed that she was skinny, some of her feathers had sheared off or fallen out, and she was gasping but wasn't making a sound. I'm thinking maybe she had an impacted crop? Though her crop was empty. And she didn't feel like she had an egg in there. She looked so miserable that we just said goodbye.

Thankfully, Russ hadn't needed to go into work early. I love that man so much!

I read in a book that that's how birds do it, since the males don't have an... um... a syringe.

(<--- couldn't find an emoticon for blushing.) Can I say the P-word on BYC? Anyway, their cloaca just kind of kiss.

I worry about all my babies (mine are 3 months and younger) and can't imagine having to let one go. So Sad!.

Seth you can buy food coloring from a cake/candy making supply house that is concentrated. It works much better than the kind you get at the grocery store. Still, use dark colors or you'll never be able to see them... and yes, you need to reapply often. Wiltons has it. www.wilton.com

haha I started to answer that this aids fertilization but I see Missy beat me to it.

Seth the coop in is 4-9 pm Friday and 7:00-8:30 am Saturday.... Judging will start with Seramas then on to the rest of the Bantams. We had to get a second Judge!! Our bird entires were WAY MORE than we expected. SO far we have 800+ birds entered! Biggest Show ever for us!!! 25 Geese, 100 ducks 9-10 turkeys.

Seth, Lots of Americaunas entered, I think you have the only showgirls entered..... I entered so many birds....47....but no showgirls this time around!

I don't have a picture of my wash set up but you can look on you-tube. I get a table with 3 tubs(metal tubs is what I use but any tub will work) 1st one has soapy water, second is clear rinse(i add a few drops of bluing to this rinse when I have white chickens) and the last tub is another rinse with a half cup of white vinegar to cut the soap residue on the feathers and makes them SHINE! I scrub the feet with an old toothbrush and trim long toenails too. towel dry and then put in a cage infront of heater... night before I rub a little vaseline on combs to keep them from looking dried and flakey white... clean nostrils and beaks with a wet Qtip...

OK normally I never correct anyone's spelling but since it was misspelled at the poultry show, the first year we went, I thought someone there should be aware that Ameraucana is not spelled with an i. This is kinda important since the Ameraucana Breeders Club is telling folks to stay away from people selling the Ameraucana when it is misspelled. This advice is given since there are so many people selling Easter Eggers as pure Ameraucanas. The club feels like anyone selling and breeding pure birds correctly would also know the correct spelling.

Hope I'm not sounding horribly picky! I normally hate it when I see someone correct someone else's spelling!

I just thought that maybe someone running the show should check that. Sorry if I'm out of line.
