Nevadans?

Sunny I am with you. I hate when people correct spelling and grammar on stupid personal things like forums and facebook. It actually makes me angry as nitpicking someones spelling on such an unimportant thing undermines what they are trying to say.
But when it comes to something professional and official they need to be taken care of. You cannot be taken seriously if you cant be trusted to spell check.
I remember my boss back in the kitchen used to make the signs for the specials and he would always put things like "Chicken/Pork Taco's". I loathed him for it as i stood behind that sign selling chicken/pork "taco's" lookin' like a fool.

OK normally I never correct anyone's spelling but since it was misspelled at the poultry show, the first year we went, I thought someone there should be aware that Ameraucana is not spelled with an i. This is kinda important since the Ameraucana Breeders Club is telling folks to stay away from people selling the Ameraucana when it is misspelled. This advice is given since there are so many people selling Easter Eggers as pure Ameraucanas. The club feels like anyone selling and breeding pure birds correctly would also know the correct spelling.

Hope I'm not sounding horribly picky! I normally hate it when I see someone correct someone else's spelling!

I just thought that maybe someone running the show should check that. Sorry if I'm out of line.

Sorry, running on very little sleep trying to do everything with the show....

I was lazy and didn't stop and even look at how I spelled Ameraucauna!! Shame on me! I can look it up in my Standard it is sitting right here too! It is just DD and I running the show, with a couple of volunteers for muscle and our sanity, DD and I have to run to Stockton to pick up more cages this week too.
DD is the one handling the Data entries (probably for this very reason!) So I hope I didn't offend anyone with my poor spelling LOL atleast I didn't spell it Americana (Did I?)

See you all at the show, hope i can stop running and say Hi! If not stop me, I'll be the one ripping my hair out! (oh man why did I enter so many birds, I just never learn!) HAHA

Oooooh..... You hit upon a pet peeve of mine with professionals (and their spelling) who should know better.

Las Vegas hosted the National Court Reporters convention a while back. Now, mind you, court reporters are wordsmiths and we get penalized/scrutinized/brought to the carpet for misspelled words, grammar and punctuation by our peers, clients and bosses. You can fail a court reporting test for that stuff.

Imagine my surprise when I saw advertised in our national magazine some cute T-shirts with the Las Vegas logo and (in steno) the infamous Las Vegas ad slogan. However, in translation it read.... "What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas."

ARGGGH! I put in a call to the head honcho court reporters (the ones who authorized this T-shirt) and they didn't seem to care.... Sigh.

(For those of you unsure of the above, the comma -- which is following the subject phrase -- should not be there before the verb)

I often laugh while perusing eBay on the misspellings. Sometimes it works to the advantage when bidding on something that's misspelled...like a Cheryl Crow CD. I have seen Americauna eggs there before. I wonder if Americana eggs are red, white and blue?

I heard something similar when studying Ninjutsu. My instructor told me that the real traditional form is spelled ninjutsu, and anyone spelling it "ninjitsu" either has created "their own style" or just doesn't know what they're doing well enough to do research on their art.

I admit I'm a bit of a grammar nazi. I refrain from correcting people (except my children) and when it happens on Facebook I just glaze over it because it happens so much and it really does relay their ignorance or lack of education. (Sorry... a few misplaced punctuation marks isn't too bad, but when it's an obvious 5 errors per subject, I'm not thinking you're a Harvard grad.)

But when someone uses it in any kind of a professional setting AT ALL, my opinion goes down if they can't get quotation marks in the right place on a freaking billboard! Right now the common one is using the apostrophe to show pluralization like Aubrey's example, when it's meant to show possession (with the exception of the contraction I just used.) Ten years ago, it was quotation marks instead of italics. Sorry, but if you put words within quotation marks, it means it's a quote, something somebody said, which means you might be unintentionally telling your audience to give a lot less credit to the same thing you want to highlight!

Ok, soapbox is over. Thank you for reading.

Hahaha! Missy and I were just talking the other day about how many people use the possessive s incorrectly. Well maybe he meant to use a contraction as in, the Chicken/Pork Taco is. OK I really felt like using quotes around that phrase but now I'm scared to cause I know it's not a direct quote.
lol.png
Go ahead Missy or Dee. Tell me how I should have written that sentence out. I'm not too old to learn how to write my native language correctly. Now I feel like the sentence structure in that last sentence is off too but I couldn't tell you why.
Sorry, running on very little sleep trying to do everything with the show....

Just the 2 of you running the whole show?!!! And you are entering how many birds? Girl you are nuts! OK I can loan DH out for a couple of hours early Friday or early Saturday. I'm no help at all unless you have a sit down job I can help with but I'd be happy to take care of any menial jobs like taking entry cards, filling out forms or helping others to, handing out literature, that kind of stuff.

And no you didn't spell it Americana. You spelled it Americauna. So the u was there, it was just in the wrong place (now I know Dee is gonna critic my misuse of commas heehee). And NO. No one here was offended! I just hear how a lot of these ameraucana folks get when the name is misspelled and I thought a note now might be better than hearing it at the show. I'm learning I should never, ever correct anyone's english though! Mine is terrible!!!

Just in case someone else wanted the standards for the Ameraucanas... http://www.ameraucana.org/standard.html

Now see there's one I would have never caught. I would have assumed the comma in that sentence just meant a pause for effect. LOL Well there are red white and blue varieties of Ameraucanas. heehee

Lol Look what I started. Now I feel ignorant. My english isn't that great either and I know I often make mistakes. *I've caught my own mistakes when rereading a post later* I've never even heard of Ninjutsu.

Well, I really don't like the hassles of watering the chickens in the winter. I still haven't forked out the cash for a heated water base. I have been dumping out the remaining water at night so it doesn't freeze and refilling in the morning. Currently, my EE Arla is winning the prize for the most hideous molting look. I need to try to get a photo of her this afternoon before it gets dark.

so, interesting development in our neighborhood. the past several days, there has been a very loud dog barking late at night. it is coming from behind our house, a few doors over from our pesky neighbor. I hope he is hearing it and waking up.
wink.png
Maybe that will make him appreciate our chickens who are completely silent at night.

Fortunately, we can't hear it back in our bedroom but we can when we're in the kitchen and living room. I was up still at 12:30 and it was very loud. the other day it was barking in the afternoon, evening and night.

sunny, the art museum has a free day the 2nd Saturday of every month and they have a different theme for each month. I have not been very dedicated about remembering but I'm going to try to do better. I'll try to post on here when one is coming up.

If you do a cookie exchange, I would be interested in participating.

hope you got lots done.

It was soooo COLD yesterday that we didn't get as much done as we wanted with all the warm up breaks...
Front view of coop and run - close up of front with wind break - Back coop with wind break - outside view of wind bread at rear - frame from back of coop to fence

Back of coop frame to fence - view of tunnel under roof extension.

It is slowly coming together but my girls are getting anxious with all the hammering... I have a new dead line... Wednesday of this coming week... (I hope)
It's looking good! Your set up is very nice.

Hey guys! Sorry I havent been around too much. October was a very hard month for me and november is shaping up the same. Ive been really pessimistic and ornery sos trying not to spread the bad mood everywhere i go, HA! (those that know me well know that it is very hard for me to see a downside to anything, these past few weeks are really REALLY testing me) Anyway...

Sheryl I m sorry for your coon woes. I will say that once i started masterlocking everything i have not had one issue with coons. Not one. I have three locks- two on the big doors and one on the pop door. I keep the keys on a hanger next to my back door. I think it will help you a lot. when they get bored of not having a way in they will go away i am certain.

Hey count me in for two for lunch. I need it!
glad you're coming to lunch. hope things are much improved for you in the months to come.
We had to put Fried Rice down today.
sad.png

For the past week, she's been sleeping in the nesting boxes. I didn't think anything of it, because those are so warm with the straw. Kung Pao has been cuddling up beside her. Last night, I put my hand in there as I locked up the chickens and it was toasty. Anyway, this morning she didn't come outside with the others. I put my hand under her to check for duck eggs, thinking maybe she was broody or just trying to lay, and she toppled on her side. So I brought her in (she fought a bit) and ran her a warm bath in the sink, thinking she was egg-bound and I had to act fast. But as I let her soak in the warm water, I noticed that she was skinny, some of her feathers had sheared off or fallen out, and she was gasping but wasn't making a sound. I'm thinking maybe she had an impacted crop? Though her crop was empty. And she didn't feel like she had an egg in there. She looked so miserable that we just said goodbye.

Thankfully, Russ hadn't needed to go into work early. I love that man so much!

so sorry. It's hard to know what is going on with them. there are so many possibilities with chickens. Which breed was Fried Rice? glad you have Russ to help you out with that very unpleasant task.

Seth the coop in is 4-9 pm Friday and 7:00-8:30 am Saturday.... Judging will start with Seramas then on to the rest of the Bantams. We had to get a second Judge!! Our bird entires were WAY MORE than we expected. SO far we have 800+ birds entered! Biggest Show ever for us!!! 25 Geese, 100 ducks 9-10 turkeys.
congrats on so many entries. Hope it goes very well.

This reminds me...

When I was about 8 months pregnant with my son, we had a neighbor's dog barking all night every night. Finally, I called the cops and I told them my name, my address, and that I am 8 months pregnant and this dog barks all night every night and I can't get any sleep and if it doesn't stop that I would kill that dog!

It stopped.
