Yesterday was 21 days that my BC Marian hen has been setting. Today one egg was pipping and chirping and seemed to be progressing. Mama hen seemed to want to help it along and was pecking at the shell then was picking at and eating the yoke sack. Chick was mostly free of the egg and was breathing when I left for dinner and when I returned a little while later chick was dead.
Seemed to looked perfectly formed. I don't see any others pipping yet and wondering what I'll find in the morning. This is her second hatch she raised one chick 2 years ago.
Does humidity matter with a broody hen as I'm reading that it does in an incubator? I'd really like to have her raise the chicks but wondering if I should take the eggs away from her?
