November/December "Hatch-a-Long"

Khakis are nice! Welsh harlequins are actually just offshoots of them - the breed was developed by a farmer who had two 'off' colored khakis pop up in his flock. I think they're prettier. This is Dove, the mother of that egg I posted:

Wow! she is beautiful! I'm gonna have to look into these and possibly reconsider ... How is her egg production and temperament?

They're very calm and docile, much more so than khakis. And when they're not molting I get an egg a day from each duck. They don't skip too many days. If you want some, I'll have eggs in the spring :p

Also, a neat trait, Welsh Harlequins are able to be sexed with 70-90% accuracy at hatch by the color of their bills.

Oh I would LOVE some eggs. Thank you! Im in northern IN so I am not sure how much of an issue shipping would be though. Ive heard good and bad stories... I will have to keep in touch with you :)

Just hand fed and watered my broodies directly on the nest. They seemed to appreciate it. :)
I have been putting handfuls of feed into my hens nest, its always gone, but today I separated her bc she kept getting confused as to which box to set in. There is a shelf in the back of my coop that extends all the way across the back. It is approx 11.5 ft long and probably 3 feet deep. I just tacked a piece of chicken wire across the top and tacked it across the bottom. I have one corner held down by a rock so I can left her out periodically. She gets sun in the spot and I have her own food and water available. Gives her plenty of space to do her business with only one nest as an option, so hopefully this helps. Ill post pics when I get some new bedding down. Mine looks pretty rough right now

Welcome to the new folks..................
Setting 12 Silkies today.............A mixture of colors so should be a treat
to see them hatch................
Good Luck everyone........................

My broody has only misplaced herself once the whole time she's set on eggs. She takes a stroll every day at least once a day (twice if it's nice out) for just a few minutes and then goes back to brooding! Every time I've found her out of the next I will touch the eggs; always still warm!

Shipping's not too bad. My eggs tend to make it okay - I sent 14 to California and on the way only one cracked. The rest were all good! Duck eggs are much tougher than chicken eggs and that helps tons.
