NY chicken lover!!!!

Time got away from me & I haven't made it on this thread in a few days. So I'm over 200 posts behind, yikes! Hope everyone is doing well.

Is anyone still hatching eggs right now? Like possibly hatched out a few chicks this weekend?

. I attempted shipped eggs again (guess I should know better) and only 1 hatched:(. So I have a lonely hatchling who needs a sibling or two. He/she is a medium sized leghorn-type bird. I'd be happy w any type of chick hatched within the last 5 days.

I'm just north of Watkins glen & would drive an hour plus to pick up. Thanks!!

Have you checked out Natureberry farm? I believe they are hatching until August.

Hello all,
So there I am pulling up the garlic bulbs, when I hear loud squeaking! Well, Mrs Rabbit had a nest of 3 kits right in the garlic patch - smart bunny! The garlic has wide mesh fencing around it to keep the hens out, and is liberally covered with straw! I hope she comes back to take care of them, I rebuilt the nest as best I could. I think the babies will be up & at 'em very soon.......hopefully the cats & dogs will not be dining on them in the near future

. Of course, I will be cursing them soon enough when they start eating the veggies!
Gorgeous day today, a bit hot, but got finished up with mowing & weeding - for now. Hope everyone had a happy & safe 4th weekend,

coop cleanings make great mulch for the garden. I used them to mulch shrubs and trees.

Morning Everyone!

Today I'm going to finish weeding the gardens, wash some dishes, laundry. DH cleaned out the juvenile pens Friday. We're using the dirty shavings between the rows in my garden to keep the weeds down and then we till them in in the fall.
Do you compost them first or are you putting them right in to the garden/trees. I thought that the poop would burn the plants. I can see that being very good for the weeds, but I'd be afraid that it would kill my other plants.

I'm getting a small egg from someone. I'm hoping it's Frenchy who is my little red frizzle. She 6 !! So far I've gotten two but I'm not sure they're fertile.

I do have a black Auraucana/EE chick running around. I'm not sure if it's a he or she. I hope it's she. I have seen Him/lavender dancing with my little Del frizzle (Cottonbud). She is laying if anyone would like to take some eggs and share the chicks.

Frenchy's I will set if they're fertile, but don't want to set Cottonbuds.

Some I compost but others got right in the beds to fill them in. Then I put soil over the top or just fill the bed and cover it with black cloth and leave it unplanted.

I have two compost piles but they're not enough. I may have to start a third. They fill up fast, with coop cleanings, run cleanings, grass from mowing and in the fall leaves.

I made a compost out of pallets and those green metal posts. It's 6 pallets long by 2 pallets wide. The metal posts hold the the pallets up. Def holds a ton more and was easy to make. The chickens have access to it and the compost breaks down so much quicker now.

I dumped the litter from coop directly into my garden this year. I only clean it out in the spring. It has not burned any plants and I just rototilled it in.

I'd like to make mine our of pallets but with my van not sure I can carry them home. I do have access to them though and may try.

My garden is raised beds.

Evening all. So I went and picked up the roos. Checked out the rest of the flock while I was there. They look good. There is one pullet though that is very small. She looks like she isnt growing. I handled her and she felt good, had nice weight on her, just really small. Anyways, I processed the roos this morning and got almost 3 pounds of meat between the two of them. Not bad. My boys were being a real pain today. I have decided to do them in on thursday. One was trying to rape the hens and another was trying to kill the rapist. My patience is done. I will process all the older boys on thursday and can them. Should be enough to fill my canning pot. Spent some quality chicken therapy time today.

Metalla--got you beat. Mosquitoes have gotten me between the legs and on my butt through my clothes. Nasty critters.

Have a good evening all.
