NY chicken lover!!!!

Last week I put 3 eggs under my broody silkie. This week there are 4 under there. Do eggs reproduce when heated?

*going out to mark the FOUR of them, in case more appear*

If she is not alone they do. When she gets off to take care of business and to eat, another hen gets in there and lays an egg.

I figured that...I just didn't mark these bunch when I set them....My bad....so I don't which one is the "new" one. We'll see if any of them hatch.

(Of course she's not alone. If I had that kind of space I'd be at your house buying up all your extra chickies)

One way is to see how 'shiny' the eggs are - after a while the 'old' eggs get shiny from all the turning.. or do what I did, sneak out there at night with my flashlight and candle them.

Still have extra chickens here to sell, although now they are all molting. LOL. Trying to sell ratty looking chickens isn't going to work so well.

They are all shiny. I *think* I know which one was new, but I am not sure and would hate to crack open a week old egg.

If I had room I'd get more chicken, but I have tooooo many roos and no one wants roos right now. Maybe in the spring I get get rid of Jessie and the unnamed one, maybe even Squeeky. 5 roos is waaaaaaaaaaaaay too many for 16 hens.

I am looking to get 3 female chicks in the spring...1 barred rock, 1 white rock and 1 New Hampshire red...my town in putnum only allows me to have 3...any ideas anyone?

Probably the best way to do that is to order from My Pet Chicken/Meyer or another hatchery that has small orders of sexed chicks. Or buy from the feed store, but less variety that way. I'd get at least five, just in case - you can always sell the extras!

Sigh. This is worse than when I gave birth to my 3 daughters.

Cleaned out both coops today and lordy I could have made a feather bed from all the feathers in the layers coop! Such raggedy looking hens and only 3 eggs today. Of course, they all had to follow me around, talking my ears off and inspecting every single thing I was doing. The least they could have done is wash their own dishes or carry something! Bagging up more pine needles and leaves tomorrow for the winter. Can never have too much!

I hope everyone got out and soaked up some vitamin d today. Since I got rid of tv, I am finding all kinds of things to do!

Hello to all the newbies, Build big cause the fever will strike and you will be getting more chickens!
