I wonder if a mother hen will start brooding again if you take her chicks away. I would not do this tho it's stressful on her.

1st of October, 8:12am here... vroody due to hatch on Saturday, has hatched 2 little australorps out this morning, with another pipping. Will get pics once she stops trying to kill me

Well, it’s me again. Received 8 Silkie eggs in the mail from another show breeder. The eggs didn’t travel well. This won’t be the hatch that turns things around lol.

The eggs just went into the incubator. If any hatch, 10/21 will be the magic day.

Oh! What’s interesting about this batch—a developing egg was accidentally packed. Of course it is a quitter, but it had a sweet little heart in the a/c.

It probably won't be clear enough but theres a chick between her butt and the wall.

Check with the shipper about shipping FED ex, they have started shipping and for eggs were cheaper than the post office without all the damage to things marks fragile

Silkie momma and her babies are so darn cute!
I had Silkies for years and bout 6mos ago we had a coop breach by a raccoon family who got them all. I'm thinking about hatching some Silkies after I'm done with incubating the Orpingtons.

If anyone has a styrofoam type incubator, this is how I set up mine. I no longer use the water jar (shown) but the sponges, aquarium tubing, & syringes -I use on lockdown so I dont have to open the incubator.
There is also aquarium tubing threaded through the side underneath the wire floor that runs into the water chambers. The center chamber have little holes cut out so the water can flow from the first chamber into the others. I clamp off the tubing with a hemostat between the incubator and syringe so when I attatch the 50ml syringe (found at Tractor Supply) the water doesnt run back out when I remove the syringe to refill it.
Adding water can be a PIA in these type incubators and it has helped alot.
