Official BYC Poll: How Old Is / Was Your Oldest Chicken?

I’ve never had any chickens live to be very old, but I have a friend who raises chickens, and they have what I believe was an Ameraucana hen that was 20 years old! I haven’t heard of her for awhile, so I’m not sure if the hen is still alive. The hen looked old, she had bad eyes, and walked around very slowly, but for being 20 years she was rocking it. The hen was given to my friend by her grandpa who has since passed, so she is very special to them. I told my friend back then she might just beat the record for oldest hen! I’ll have to ask her to see if the hen is still alive.

Hannah, a Buff Orpington we have is the last of our original 4 hens. She is now 6 and still is laying eggs!

The record has been broken by Peanut, who is 21 and still clucking.

A Buff Orpington, Hannah, was our oldest chicken so far. We got our first chicks in early 2016. Hannah just passed away this past June (2023) at 7. She was the sweetest girl ever. When she got feeble several months before we 'winged it' and built her a wheelchair ourselves. She liked sitting in it on summer days watching us as we did yard projects, and watch over some new baby chicks in the yard in their bin on nice days.
