OHio ~ Come on Buckeyes, let me know your out there!

Delcochix, where are you located? I am between sunbury and croton, would love to get together with someone to learn and see more of how things are done with chickens. I have just had them for 2 months. Thanks

Thank you for your input! Thought you might have some wisdom in the area. I have Tylan but had someone else look at it and think it's sinus. I started giving her penicillin shots this morning and have been treating her with an opthamalogical gel as well as Aureomycin crumbles in her food. Going to lance her tonight as we are not getting much out from her actual lids. Guessing there is a hard disk in there. And a hard drink or two waiting for me after I get this done. Ugh.

Trying my best not to have to put her down. If Hubs sees what I've spent on meds he might put me down!

Howdy!
I'm just a little northeast of Delaware (city), about 4 miles out--back up to Delaware State Park-not too far from Cashmans Drive Thru Feed on Rt.42north. You're maybe 20 minutes from me--was just out that way in March at the tack swap over at Success Acres on Meredith Road I think.
Chickens are a never-ending crittur to learn about---we're on year six and barely scratched the surface! Would be great to get together and swap info!
How many do you have..so far? Of course that number will fluctuate...sometimes going down a little...but usually going up...a LOT!
I've sort of kept it under control, till now when I ended up with way too many cockerals...down to at least seven, but still seven too many! Need one?

I have 4 bantam hens (D'Uccles and a Silkie) in one coop, and 14 laying hens (3-5 years old), and then the new blood, now 18 12 week chicks, that's where the silly boys come in...I just wanted to add to my girls and get some unique breeds, so of course that means not hatchery-sexed chicks. Sigh.

i think its sinus too. i believe yours started in the eye. that's why i gave you treatments instead of just saying put her down. the penicillin will do more for you than the aureomycin (i think), be careful of over medication. any time i say use tylan penicillin will probably work, i just prefer the tylan. it seems to work quicker, and it seems there is less resistance to it. penicillin i believe is a lot cheaper though. if i remember right a bottle of penicillin is about $8 where tylan is a little over $30.

just for record and experience, and i hope someone lets me know if im wrong; here is why i think it started in the eye. if i remember right you said you gave acv. acv will normally kill most respiratory infections. in your case the eye seems to be swollen more than the comb and wattles. as bad as that eye is swollen there would most certainly be sinus issues to go with it, and more than likely the infection has spread to the other eye, possibly ears and throat even if you cant see the symptoms.

Hey Ohio people, thought I'd say Hi. We're located south of Columbus, in northern Pickaway County.

As long as people are getting rid of cockerels--we have several to choose from. At least one red EE, and several white Leghorn/Marans crosses. We probably also have a Tetra Tint or two (RIR X white Leghorn). All except the EE are just old enough to start seeing that they are boys. The EE is probably eight weeks old. Free to anyone who wants some (even for eating). They are scheduled to be culled on Thursday evening, 6/20/13.

There's no one out there with purebred Ameraucanas, is there? I'm also looking for a RIR cockerel or two.

pure bread ameraucanas do not exist, they are a cross of aracauna and an any American breed. people sell what they call pure aracauna's in multiple colors, most are showable. a true aracauna is tailess.

there are some breeders around who offer the tailed variety in black, lavender, silver, blue, chocolate, and several other colors. i only have black myself, supposed to have lavender on the way. mine are still to young to lay, but if you cant find what your looking for; i might have some next spring in those 2 colors.

There is a great facebook page rare poultry swap and sell. I just got some CCL eggs from a lady named stephanie. 14 came in perfect shape. I broke 1. I did candle them today and 12 of the 13 left loi k great. She has ameraucanas in lavender, splash, and other colors. I don't know if it is still available but she had a buyer back out today and was offering 18+ eggs for $45 with shipping included.

Hi Delcochix, were going to be over your way in the morning. There's a kids fishing derby at the marina at the state park. The grand kids have a ball....so does grandpa! Meredith state is the next road over from me. Small world. Right now I have 24 chickens but my son is taking about 6. I started out intending having 6 or 8. Lets see, I have two buff orphingtons (I think one is a roo), two gold laced Wyandot, five buckeyes, and four americaunas that are all two months old. Then there is six Rhode Island reds and five silver laced polish (I love the Mohawks) these are all one month old. Plus I got three baby ducks. I supposedly bought all hens, but I know there is at least one rooster and I think there might be another one, and that's only in the older ones. Who knows about the younger ones. Guess I will find out soon enough.

Since Ameraucanas have an APA Standard of Perfection and a Breeder's Association, I think a LOT of people would disagree with you. I absolutely do not want a rumpless, tufted Araucana--I'm looking for birds from breeders that are working towards the APA Standard of Perfection for the Ameraucana breed, which was recognized in 1998 and is tailed and has a beard and muffs, slate legs, and blue eggs. http://www.ameraucana.org/standard.html.

Yes, I do know the difference between an Ameraucana, Araucana, and Easter Egger.

to all the new members and ESPECIALLY all you new Buckeyes! I'm also lovin' that there seems to be more chicken lovers coming out of the wood work that live a bit north of Columbus...I would love to meet everyone! I live in the Marengo area with my band of silkies, showgirls and guineas. Anyone interested in having a gathering somewhere local??? I know so many newbie poultry people (myself included!) that would welcome the chance to learn and to network!!
