I'm at a loss here on your timer setting , please explain. Why would would you want to turn a light on your fowl at dusk and have it go off 4 hours later catching the birds on the ground ,in the dark ,and them not being able to see to fly up on the roost? Now if you are wanting an early hatch, and wanting to give the birds 12 or so hrs of light to trigger egg production , I can see having the lights come on 4 hrs. before daylight. Personally, trapping my birds on the ground is not a practice that I would advise anyone to do . Like I said , please explain , I sure would be interested in learning what is to be gained by doing that.
I think she means the timer turns the light on just before sunset, attracting the birds to the lit up coop at night then the light goes off 4 hrs after dark.
I guess I did not make that really clear. The timer is actually one used for holiday lights but works great for my purpose. My coop does not have windows at this time so is like a cave when it gets dark and the chickens will not go in there. I have a bunch of newbies, just out of the quaranteen pen and grow-out pens that still have not learned to go into the coop at night. This draws them in and gives them light to get situated on the roosting racks and nesting boxes. One of the next projects for the coop is to install two small windows but still haven not found the size or type I am looking for. (If anyone has some small aluminium or vinyl windows no bigger then 20" x 24" I would gladly give them a new home.)
