***OKIES in the BYC III ***

I've checked all my heated waterers, and so far they are all working well. This would have been my first morning to break ice! I'm so happy not to have that as an obstacle this winter.

I'm looking forward to seeing everyone at Shawnee. I'll be at the breakfast meet-up for sure, but I don't know about lunch yet. I'm hoping to make both.

I'm doing Chicken Fried steak, mashed potatoes and gravy for dinner. Lunch (I'm eating now) is Sausage with diced onion and bell pepper, toped with eggs.

Saturday, I will be present in a black leather coat, and OU cap. Blue jeans and boots of course.

O yea. My lovely wife just put on a big ole pot of gumbo and its already smelling devine in here.

Michael did i read that right? Not only does she deer hunt but trap too. How do ya keep the little country boys ran off? Ive got an ole double barrel 8ga if ya need to borrow it sometime. Its big and load and scares the crap out of teenage boys.

Poco, I broke ice. And it sucked. I've got a 55 gal barrel with a stock tank heater in it out in the 1 chicken area and that will help. What I want is to run to Tractor Supply and get those 11" around 1 gal rubber feeders for $5. Heck, I'm sure I waited too long and they're out now. I've got 1 gal plastic waterers but those are worthless for winter.
Do you suppose a crock pot set on "warm" with sand in it and a bowl placed on the sand would work? I've got 4 crock pots that I don't use anyway. I'm going to plug one in on the deck and do a test run to make sure it doesn't get too hot.

Your crock pot breathes on the underside depending on what style you have. Most also are not to be "immersed" so I wonder how outside weather conditions would affect the heating element.... will be interested in what you figure out.

If you make the cookie tin heaters, could your 1 gallon plastic waterers sit on those?

I use the 1 gallon plastics and they don't freeze for at least 3 days below freezing, with no heaters in use.

If you cannot find any of the Black Rubber tubs I have several here that I do not use..

I'm at a loss here on your timer setting , please explain. Why would would you want to turn a light on your fowl at dusk and have it go off 4 hours later catching the birds on the ground ,in the dark ,and them not being able to see to fly up on the roost? Now if you are wanting an early hatch, and wanting to give the birds 12 or so hrs of light to trigger egg production , I can see having the lights come on 4 hrs. before daylight. Personally, trapping my birds on the ground is not a practice that I would advise anyone to do . Like I said , please explain , I sure would be interested in learning what is to be gained by doing that.

I think she means the timer turns the light on just before sunset, attracting the birds to the lit up coop at night then the light goes off 4 hrs after dark.

I guess I did not make that really clear. The timer is actually one used for holiday lights but works great for my purpose. My coop does not have windows at this time so is like a cave when it gets dark and the chickens will not go in there. I have a bunch of newbies, just out of the quaranteen pen and grow-out pens that still have not learned to go into the coop at night. This draws them in and gives them light to get situated on the roosting racks and nesting boxes. One of the next projects for the coop is to install two small windows but still haven not found the size or type I am looking for. (If anyone has some small aluminium or vinyl windows no bigger then 20" x 24" I would gladly give them a new home.)
