Okies in the BYC The Original

My math skills or skills of observation seem to be lacking. I was outside earlier this afternoon and there are now 3 adult Naragansett tom turkeys in the yard, instead of 2 adult toms. I still have 3 adult Naragansett hens so none of them was visited by the gender change fairy, so I am trying to figure out where this adult tom turkey came from.

They are similiar in color to wild turkeys, but this one is hanging out with my two fairly tame toms and I can't tell any difference in its coloration, just know that although full grown, it is a little younger because its legs aren't as thick.

I think the thanks are due to YOU! You work so hard each year to make it all go smoothly. Your 4-Hers are also such cheerful, willing helpers. Hope you do put on a fall show as well.

Thanks Jeannie. Did you hear that Roy ended up with the Buff ducks that I got from you. I decided to keep just one variety and we decided on the Rouens. I think they are really cute. I just need to get me some more RIR hens and get rid of the BSL. I would like to have pure birds. It would be different if I could tell the difference between the eggs. The RIR and BSL hens that I have now lay identical eggs. I will be getting rid of four RIR pullets. We overwintered them for a friend. I wouldn't mind keeping them, but they really aren't pure. They were hatched from my eggs, so some may be crosses. I can't be positive. I am also overwintering the two Partridge Silkies for another friend. As soon as she takes them, I will be on the lookout for two white pullets or hens. I have decided to let my Serama keep her eggs, if she ever lays any, and hatch them. Then I will keep two pullets and sell the rest. These decisions will leave me with 4 White Silkies and 4 Seramas. I think that is a good number for the 4x4 condos.

So how are your farm-cleanup plans going? Did you get everything burned off before the wet stuff hit again? How did the sale of your pony go?

P.S. I'm bored and losing my mind. I have been without internet, other than my phone, for a week. I'm really talkative now that I am sitting in front of a computer with access to the rest of the world. My internet will not be fixed until Tuesday morning, but I have full access to do whatever I want at the office. I just gotta find the time to get here. I had some work to catch up on this weekend, so I'm rambling like crazy.

Pony is pending pick up and payment Tuesday.. the couple alloted to pay me that day they came out but told them to hold off for payment when they come get her just in case they may change their minds... ect...

Yes we were able to have a nice big burn before the wet weather PTL.. still plenty to clean up but it will get there in due timing I am sure.. of course looking at your pen layout has me all coveting the layouts we wanna do on our place.. ha ha...

Jeannie

HEY Ms P&B

Ok all you smart turkey raisers out there.. is it possible for the Naragensett Tom we were blessed with to have funky turkeys if they were "mating" with a Standard Bronze Hen in some major "heat" ha ha... Our Naragensett Hen is not digging him but the Bronze Hens are... ha ha

I get the pleasure of starting over at a new place, so I can do it the way I want. It will be our place and not just somewhere we are staying. That makes it fun. I want to do it the "right" way for us, so I won't want to change it after a couple of months. I am constantly changing the setup I have now, because I'm not happy with it. I cna do the new pens while the old pens are still up. This will make it easier, so I won't have to build temmporary pens to hold the birds. The only problem I can foresee is that all the birds are freeranging at will now, when I move they will be in enclosed pens. This may not make them happy, but the other side of town had a bigger predator problem. There is a creek bed that runs on the south and west side of the property. Larger predators tend to hang out there when the creek fills with water. Usually it is dry, unless we get a substantial amount of rain.

My plans are to have a section for the "mixed breeds" and keep pure breed Barred rocks for our production purpose in the coop and run...

We are going to do the same with Turkeys too... raise a few different heritage breeds before we buck down to 1-2 breeds that we would prefer.. right now they along with

the geese and duck(since we still have the one duck) just roam around claiming the property like its theirs...

Eventually we would like to raise a steer for meat and I (not necessarily jason) would like to get my hands on a jersey girl to raise for raw milk consumption purposes

Quenston,

Sounds like you racked up some goods. I love auctions, yard sales and flea markets.
