I have never thought about painting tarps before! While painting them doesn't sound like fun, I am amazed that Muesky had one last 7 years! WOW! Plus I bet it offers an even more "dense" shade--what kind of paint are you using...latex or ???

And I have never thought of using sheets or blankets as shade-providers! I knew if I asked you guys would have good ideas!

And I think I have one area--"the chicken tent" that would benefit from having branches laid over it to give it even more shade other than the tarp that is over it now.

What I would really love to do is to put a carport out there so they have deep shade and also get a nice dry area that will help during rain, snow, etc.

One problem with the carport we have now...when the company came to install it, they didn't set the anchors deep enough. One night we had straight line winds that flipped that thing over several times and left it on it's back! Vern and I managed to flip it back over with the tractor and a 16' corral panel...let me just say that I am amazed that we did it...and even more amazed that we didn't make it on the "stupid ways to die" list!

One of hens hatched her first chick today! I was so excited until I went back to check on it and somehow the other broodies in the coop got to it and pecked it to death. I can't figure out how it happened. The momma hen and chick were up in a nesting boxes and the other 2 are down on the ground in the corner. There is a board about 3 inches high in front of the box so I don't think it could have fallen out. What can I do to prevent this if any more hatch?

You really need to move your broodies to a portable nest or put a wire front on the nest when the chicks are close to hatching, you can put a shallow pan (like a Tuna can ) in each corner for feed and water( Put marbles or rocks in the water pan in case the chicks get in there). I used old plastic pet carriers for nest and they work great, I pick them up at garage sales or where ever I see them cheap, with or without doors. When a hen gets broody I close the door or block it with a board and move her to a pen or I have big wood boxes for broodies that I just set the carrier in and a quart fountain waterer and a can of feed in corners, hen will turn the waterer over some but that is better than drowned chicks(experience Talking here). Have wire tops on the boxes with a light on a timer on it as they are in a room in my barn. Hope this helps, Lynn

So sorry! Usually the chick will stay under mama hen and she won't leave the nest until a day or so after hatch, if she hears them peeping. Of course, in this heat, the chick may not have stayed under mama hen, but instead gotten on top of her back and fallen out of the nest. If that happened, mama hen wouldn't go after the chick if she hears peeping from the rest of the eggs, so the chick would have been unprotected from the other hens.

Once that first chick has hatched, you can move mama hen and her chick to a cage or pet carrier as Greybear suggested. She will stay with the rest of the eggs and her chick that way and can protect her chicks. I have had mixed results trying to move a hen before the first chick hatched - if she wasn't "in the hatching zone" she didn't always stay on the nest until the eggs hatched if she had other options about where to go.

I have never stopped at Pops on the old Route 66, but understand that the food is good and it is almost impossible to imagine a variety of soda pop that isn't available for sale. I have a friend who used to stop there everyday on her way home when she was pregnant, to get two cupcakes.

I agree - it is hard to breath when it is so hot outside. I am getting ready to do chores here in a few minutes. It was way too hot before the sun went down, to stay outside long enough to feed and water.

Hey everybody!

Michael that was a really pretty rooster you bought last night. Not so much interested in gamebirds but he was nice.

I bought three ameraucana hens last night. A blue, a black and a white with a bit of tanning on her. The black on smelled really bad and had a bit of eye and nasal discharge. I gave her a bath (which she seemed to really enjoy, go figure) and a shot of Tylan50. Will follow up with her tomorrow. I now have two black, three blue and one white ameraucana hens. With my black rooster and partridge rooster I should have some really interesting babies coming in the following months. When I went to Harrah to pick up some bourbon red turkey babies the guy there gave me a pair of solid white ameraucanas (pullet and cockeral). It will be really exciting to see how they develop and what I can get from them. Hopefully I can get the breeding pen set up soon so I can put some sets together and get some nice chicks. Going to have to use broodies though since I refuse to get the incubators out. Fortunatly I have 5 and they let me move eggs around and mess with them, so that is all good.

Maribeth of the chicks you bought, did you get any ameraucanas? There were a bunch at the auction last night but I did not get any. Non-buyers remorse!!!
