LOL he said if I get to busy in school and we have to get rid of the chickens he can have it for a shed. There is definitly ulterior motives involved. Now my daughter said DAD where is my playhouse? She said those DUMB chickens have a house and I don't so he went and bought the rest of the lumber and windows for a playhouse... What a good guy.

He doesn't even like chickens but, he loves eggs and breakfast so.... see he always has a plan in the works.

Just to raise till slaughter or?...

up till slaughter (~8wks) I have pens that are like 3'x2'x8" high...about...maybe...I think...I measured them once and posted it somewhere

Well I plan to keep a few for eggs. I am thinking I will keep 12 for eggs/breeding and I want a growing pen big enough to hold maybe 30 meat birds at a time.

wdmyers - that size will work for you then...however if you go much past that in age the hormones kick in and they will kill each other off...then hens will be well molested to death and the cocks can really fight! If you keep 4 trios which would be 12 birds...that would be roughly 49 eggs per week you could bank on...those would need their own space of course...You might get away with a colony breeding and have like two males with 10 females...I would go with the rios myself. They only need like 10"x18"x8" tall. Just some thoughts and suggestions based on what I do. If you do the colony breeding thing then go with the same size pen you are growing the others out in. I have three of those pens so I could feasably rotate through in 18 day intervals...hatching time...plus grow till slaughter....see the madness in my ways!

I think I am leaning toward trios my self. Sounds to me like I should just start with 2 trios and maybe expand later.

They breed like rats...as a matter of fact...my rats are impressed with them. The main reason to have more is if you want different colors. If you are just looking for eggs and birds for meat...a couple trios will work for you.

Hi Cubin, yes I have a Black Roo and one Splash hen and two very pretty Blue lacy hens in the Standard size Cochins.
If you want a really cheap brooder, just go get a refrigerator box from an appliance store and cut it about in half long ways, set the corners on cement blocks and put a couple of brooder lights up through holes in the top, caeful not tuching so as not to start a fire, WAHLAH instabrooder!!!
Teach I guess I better get some Quail cages built too huh!!! I have a dozen - mixed - Pure Breed eggs (from all my breeder pens) up on the auction sites that are not getting any bids, if they do not sell tonight are any of you interested in them for say $15 shipping and all or come pick them up at my house for $5 ????? Lynn

Ok Teach, the rooster is a third generation son from Ima Winter's
champion line. The hen is out of a pair of unrelated parents from
Barry Shakes and Anita Mann. She wants $100 for the pair but will negotiate.
