I'd say egg eatter... A hen of yours, maybe?
I have that problem with one of my hens.
She ate her eggs when ever my hen that was broody would leave the nest.

it is possible that one chicken is an egg eater - also possible that all this stormy weather we have been having is throwing them off their egg laying. I have 20 laying hens and generally get about 12 eggs per day. I expect that they will start laying better again when the sun comes out for a few days.

About the only thing I know to do is to check the nest box several times a day sometime when you are home (weekend?) and gather eggs promptly. Also, avoid feeding broken eggs or egg shells back to your chickens, without cooking them so that the chickens don't make the connection between raw eggs and yummy treats

For those blessed with an egg eater there is a simple cure. No it's not Henny's ax, it's a roll out nest box. Nest boxes can be built in such a manner that when the hen lays the egg it will roll through a curtain and out of sight is out of mind to a hen. They usually have a flip-up front so you can collect the eggs later.

Another possibility is that one of the hens laid a soft-shelled egg. This happens more often then people think but they usually break and are eaten quickly by the flock.

Yes it is 1 teaspoon Carla. thank you for the correction. Now ya'll see why I don't often cook!! LOL

I have made that error when cooking - and had to add 2x more of all other ingredients so there wouldn't be too much salt in the cookies

which is why if I put in a Tablespoon of salt and should have only put in one teaspoon, I have to add enough ingredients so that I am making the recipe x three or ruin the other ingredients already added. Of course, it isn't too bad when you figure it out BEFORE it is baked and can still remedy the situation, it is when you discover the error AFTER it is baked that is frustrating.

and collect immediatley. I was so excited about them starting to lay, I have been doing that but I had to spend the whole day running around in town today. It could have been the soft shell deal too. I have never fed them egg shells, cooked or raw, so that isn't it. I think there would be some tiny bits of shell somewhere if one ate it, ... what do you think? My DH keeps telling me to give them calcium.

I know I am alittle late on this post & happy to see that others stepped in to help with the med's to be given.
I would also ask what you are feeding your chickens, I know you are new & wondered if you knew that they
need to have laying pellets or crumbles in order to have the correct amount of protein ect in their diet.

I also get the impression they are young chickens (just started laying) and they can have a few "mistake" eggs
as they are getting started.

I just got in from the hospital to have a bite to eat, fixed the internet **note to self show others how to reset the router***

Grandma is still hanging in there & hopefully things will start to get better, thank you for your continued prayers.

Sorry I missed out chatting with everyone!

Donna I am so glad that you guys are alright.
