I moved to the country in September 2011! I then went to our towns fair at the end of that month! Saw a beautiful BA roo and had to have him (with no coop)! Then I realized a minute later that he needed girlfriends! So...I bought a NH and a RI Red hen! That started it all! I said only these three honey! I promise! I had no other animals besides my cats at the time! We have now been in NH for 6 months and check out my sigature line!!!!!! Chicken Subtraction is fiction! Chicken Addition is FACT!!!!!!!!!! Go forth and multiply!!!!! Enjoy!!!!!

I would caution you against jumping in too deep too fast. Going from a couple of cats to the number of animals in your signature in 6 months is asking for a quick burn out. Best advice I heard on a thread about moving to the country and starting a farm, is to "add one new thing each year".

I'm kinda where you're at now. We close on our 10-acre property next week and will then go from an urban house with chickens in the backyard, to a far larger undertaking. I have so many things I want to do - get a vegie garden established, chicken coop built, expand my flock, and add either pork or beef, but I have decided to follow that advice and not try to do too much the first year. I'm hoping we will be there a LONG time so there will be time enough in the future to properly research and learn what we need, to successfully add different types of livestock over time.

I just shared this post with my husband, we don't even have our chicks yet, and he precedes to tell me that there is such a thing as Chicken Subtraction.... So not only is there addition, he is telling me there is subtraction... LOL!!!! had to laugh.

I was going to say that I have subtracted a number of Y chromosome infected chickens from my flock, but then I realized I just added them to my fridge, so I guess maybe in a way there really isn't subtraction in chicken math.

We used to have over 78 birds chickens,ducks ect. well we got out of it for a while after the kids were born alittle over a month ago we decides we would get about 5 hens well we now have 11 grown hens 2 roosters 14 baby chicks and 11 more coming the 2nd of march so it is true the chicken math never lies

Bee careful. First time you harvest a fresh chunk of comb and carry it back to the house you will be hooked. A few stings are well worth that.

Last April I saw a sign on the side of the road on our way home that read: BABY CHICKS My sister-out-law and I just HAD to check them out, so in we went. Within 30 minutes I had 6 day old chicks in a box and walked into my house and announced to my hubby that we need a chicken coop. LOL Being the sweet and understanding hubby that he is, I had a coop within a couple of weeks while we raised the chicks in a dog crate on the back porch. So hubby built me this huge coop with a huge run and I'm looking at these 6 little chicks thinking that's a lot of coop for just you guys, we need more. So off I went and bought 6 more. A week later, 20 more! Yes, we are hooked...

Needless to say eventually hubby needed to expand the chicken coop and run and basically doubled it in size from the original. We now have 22 laying hens, 2 roosters and 53 chicks at various ages, mostly New Hampshires and Delawares, some RIR's. (18 just hatched Mon/Tues) I just received 13 Buff Orp eggs yesterday that I will be putting into the incubator today so hopefully we'll be adding those to our flock soon.

I bought a new coop last night, picking it up tomorrow just for the new additions. Luckily I sell eggs to offset some of the cost of having my addiction. Right now I have more customers than eggs, so it's logical that I need more hens right?
