Buster, please go to this link and read up on what just happened when somebody tried to stop a dog attacking. Please understand, I am not trying to argue or fight here, just keep our livestock and children safe.

Lickskillet's daughter used a shovel to try to get the dog away, didn't work...............

This may have worked for you, but is it worth it if a child is bitten? How about you with busted bones from the bites? GS dogs generally need to be trained when to stop attacking. Their natural instinct is to keep going till they are tired out or there are no more targets. They aren't the only ones.

I wish you luck, and I hope you PLEASE don't try to break up any more dog vs. livestock action without something..

Could Lickskillet send her awesome sherriff's deputies over to this other state? They sure could use someone in authority who actually understands the law and applies it correctly!!

I would never suggest a child or anyone short of a grown man attempt to physically stop a large dog, and even then never bare handed (a boat oar did the trick for me... bit different when swung by a 220 pound man rather than a child). But there are other alternatives. A neighbor uses bird shot to the rear to keep dogs off his property. Loud and painful. Scares the poop out of the dog, plus stings plenty. That would certainly work to stop any dog attack I could imagine. So far, he hasn't killed any.

If you have roaming dogs that keep coming on your property, get a good BB gun and ping them every time you see them. They'll stop coming eventually. That's cheaper than investing in a shotgun and birdshot, if you don't have those already. I don't know a BB would help in a situation as described in the OP. Probably not. But bird shot would. The BB gun would stop them from wandering around your place, though.

And as with any predator situation, protecting your critters in the first place is what is more important. Once the animal is in your chicken yard, it is obviously already too late. For me, every time I lose a bird to some critter, I find yet another hole in my defenses and shore it up.

We are eventually going to run an electric fence around our entire 8 acres in addition to the good fence we already have. Defense is the key. Protect your animals.

But I'm sure all of you know that already.

Something pushed the neighbors to call the sheriff.. When you're that far in the wrong, you don't run to the authorities unless you think it will benefit you to at least act as though you believe you've been done wrong somehow.

Sounds to me like they're afraid they're about to get sued, and they're trying to turn it into a he-said/she-said..

Lickskillet....Did you, by any chance, already send those letters about their kids harrassing you guys?

If so..I bet they're messin their pants right now.

I'm glad your neighbors were dumb enough to call the cops and to know that said cops are on your side.

As for the breaking up the dog from the chickens, like he!! would I let the dog live if I were in the same situation. From a mothers standpoint, you hear your kid screaming something about some animal attacking and you go into mother bear mode. I love and adore animals but when it comes to protecting my kids, it's game on and I'm not taking hostages. You just can't take the chance that the dog may or may not turn on your kid in that kind of situation.

ya know, I've always lived in the country and rarely go about unarmed anyways..... so it's natural for me to have at least a .22 strapped over my shoulder or leaned up at the picnic table close by. I usually have a sidearm if I don't have anything else handy.

lickskillet Sometimes I surprise myself ...lol

From the start I knew the people you are dealing with are not right in the head ...(to say the lease)

QUICK STORY:

I was in court, We took a break in the proceedings to to try and come to an agreement.

The person that took me to court (They where in the wrong) actually had the audacity to say " The Judge is wrong!"

BTW: I was awarded what was in my favor.

So please do not be surprised if they still insist they are in right. and you are wrong still.
It takes all kinds.

You have the law on your side, they are their to serve and protect.
Please use them. It will also be another form of documentation.

My prayers are still with you and your family.
Wishing their where more people out their like you.

A friend to all, Holly

(Nah,,,, that might be taking things a bit too far)

But if your run was damaged and you incur cost to repair it, I'd add that too. And off course be sure to keep any receipts related to this.
