Oops, I did it again...

Week five already, and very soon the chicks will be big enough to be outside full-time. The weather here has been crazy, going from near 70° to almost freezing, and there’s a possibility of snow this Thursday so I’m going to wait until next week to fully integrate them. I’ll wait until next week to post photos on the “What gender am I” thread as well, even though I’m dying to know what everyone thinks!

Here’s the big Brahma, feathering out nicely.

Maniacal still is proving herself to be the leader of the pack. She’s very curious about the world.
View attachment 2625493One of the two straight run “Ameraucanas”, and it has been fun watching the feathering develop on this one.

and, of course, cheeky little Sadie. ❤️

Because they insist on it, here’s the rest of my backyard flock.

Wynona was one of a small flock given to me by a friend back in 2016. They’re all around 6 years old but still laying plenty of green eggs for us. She came along with Patsy, Loretta, and June, below.

Megalodon, or Meg, is the boss hen of the group - she is an Asian sex link I got from TSC with a group of mystery chicks, none of whom turned out to be what they were supposed to. I think she’s very pretty and I love the green sheen on her feathers.

And finally, my very favorite girl, Fatty, my Dominique, who was supposed to be something else. She is the sweetest, most laid back chicken, and she loves to hang out with me whenever I pay the girls a visit.

You have a fantastic assortment!

Week 7 (skipped a week!) and the little girls are fully integrated with the existing flock and sleeping in the coop. No individual shots anymore, they’re too hard to catch, but I’m feeling confident they’re all pullets, and they make a wonderful addition to my flock. We’ve named the Brahma Tofu, and the darker Easter egger is called Coward, for self-explanatory reasons.

Here’s the new batch from the brooder:

Chipmunk is my son’s chick, and I love her leopard like markings on her face.

Blackjack appears to be the boss chick of the current group, and even though she’s tiny still she finds a way up to the foot-high roost in the brooding box.

Sundae is one of the few light colored chicks from the batch of 10 Easter egger chicks we got from the natural pet center, and I kept her because all the other chickens we have are darker in color so I thought shed be a nice change of pace.

Lavender snuck in with a batch of 6 pasty-butted silkies labeled as brahmas at TSC. I was able to clean them all up and find them homes, but decided to keep just one. Sure hope she’s a girl.

And, finally, little Derp. She’s been a problem since the day I brought her home, and I didn’t think she’d survive the night, but she rallied and looked great for the first week. Now she’s developed cross beak, and of course she’s my very favorite of all the chicks I have had this season. I’m going to do my best by her, and hopefully she’ll be able to get enough food into her to thrive.

I'm going to hold off posting a photo of Derp for now - she had her first beak trim today and it was kind of traumatic for both of us. She’s starting to fall behind in development in comparison to her fellow chicks, and if the trim doesn’t help her gain some ground, I’m afraid I’m going to have to make some tough decisions. :hit Keep your fingers crossed for wee Derpy! I’ll try to get some pictures of the big chicks tomorrow, they’re looking gorgeous!

The 8 week old big babies were on the move today!

Maniacal is getting just the barest hint of wattle development.

Tobu is getting absolutely enormous, and is the only one of the babies to brave intermingling with the big chickens when I’m doling out kitchen scraps.

Coward has developed quite the adorable muff, and still wants nothing to do with me.

for a short time, Sadie’s cheeks went away, but now they’re back in full force!

I put the little chicks, now three weeks old, out in the chick tractor to enjoy the sunshine. Sundae and Derp did a little cuddling. 💕
