'indigenous' is a matter of time really. Apparently chickens were introduced to Britain by the Romans, there weren't any here before then. The Dorking seems to be the closest descendant to those Roman imports, and the rest of the so-called British breeds came from them, with frequent liberal additions of other immigrants. We and our chickens are all mutts at the end of the day :D
Oh, all breeds are essentially mutts. :D And new breeds are always welcome. But there is a difference between a carefully bred "mutt" and what some people pass off as a purebred (at steep prices too). Plus, if the genepool gets too messed up, it's hard to go back.

I love the diversity of mixed breeds as well. Some of the best pets are mixes (that goes for all animals). And as with the landraces, sometimes you just need to go with what works best for your situation.

They are so pretty - love the white with the black spots!
I know, right?

Have you looked into lavendar araucana or cream legbar for blue eggs? Then there is Silverudds Blue/Isbar with a wide range of green/blue. I don't know how easy they are to get in France, though.

Hello Perris.
Given Wales is a separate country to England you should be okay on this thread.
:lau:lau
Why not give the French Marans a go. They're not the greatest layers but I think they look lovely and the ones here have done well.
Yes I've got some of those too - 2 pullets of which I'm sure one is laying but the 2nd may have started yesterday as had a funny coloured egg. I also have a young roo but I cna't decide if I want to keep him or not.

I also have shades of tan / cream (faverolles girl I think), and one looks slightly pink next to the browner ones so hoping I can get a real mix of colours from Olive green with marans / araucana mix and other shades of green with the other shades of brown. I'm also going to get some Cream Legbars (had no success twice might even try to get day old chicks off him if he has some in the brooder when I have a broody) of a local breeder and he was picking up some green laying eggs too so will probably try to get my hands on some of them too!

I know there is a member here from Portugal, I just can't recall their name atm.
There are also at least three from Italy.
I actually had the thought of starting this thread when I spotted the Portuguese person but also can't remember thier name. There are also a couple of peeps from more eastern Europe (Latvia I want to say but cant' really remember). If anyone spots them just copy thier user names and tag them on here - the more the merrier!
indeed - Wales being one of the last refuges of the pre-Roman [European] Celts!
:D just before Christmas I had a fabulous weekend in Wales for my brothers wedding (he lives in Penarth). It was at Pont-y-pen ?? (Bridgeend) on a farm - so much fun - in the torrential rain :lau:lau

We are living in multicultural harmony, even if the rest of UK isn't
Hi and welcome!
Hiiii I live in Malta but am originally from the UK! I got my first set of chickens last year and we now have 15!
Sounds similar to me - had mine just over a year and up to 18!!! I have a friend who lives on Gozo.

I wonder if we have any members from Austria or Belgium :hmm
I know there is a fiesty user from Greece, but looks like they deleted their threads so I can't find him now. He was a fun individual.
