Pigeon Talk

Great job rescuing him/her! If you want to get more, and are interested in rescuing, I know there’s quite a few pigeon sanctuaries in California. I was really surprised that rescue pigeons even existed when I first found out!
Yeah, I’m very close to Palomacy. I’ll probably get her mate from there and expand with breeder birds.

Just rescued this little one yesterday after trying to catch it for five days. I suspect it’s a “release dove” that couldn’t find its way home after an event. I think I might be hooked, because I’ve wanted a pair or two for nearly seven years now :celebratebut have never been in the right place for them. I’ll probably end up sending a feather in somewhere like UCDavis to check for sex, but I am almost certain its a she.
:idunnoI think I got the bug:th

Your persistence speaks well of you! How did you finally catch her?

I tried just about every trick in the book :barnie
Grabbing by hand, foot snares, rodent traps of various sizes, ventures out in the dark. What finally worked was a large wire dog crate with bailing twine tied to the door. I tried that the first day, and it took five days for me to be there at the right time, but I eventually learned her schedule. They really will do anything for safflower :pop

Well, now I'm annoyed.

I contacted the breeder today because I realized I had lost track of the days and she'd actually said she would mail them Monday. Of course, it's Tuesday and she had never said anything to me about shipping them or tracking number, etc.

So I sent her a message. Turns out, she didn't send them at all, because I sent a personal check and "she doesn't take personal checks, only money orders or Western Union". Except, when I mailed the check I very clearly said to her, "If it's fine with you, I will mail you a check today. Please let me know where to mail it". That was the message I sent. She replied with her address.

So she was aware I was sending a check and sent me the address to mail it to. That, to me, seems an awful lot like she was fine with me sending a check. Not sure how else I could have interpreted that.

So now she has a check of mine in her possession that she could cash at basically any time, and isn't going to send my birds apparently. Never had to cancel a check before but I guess I'm gonna have to figure out how now.

What makes me even more annoyed now that I think about it, is that she said she discovered the check when "she went to the PO to ship the birds and opened the envelope to use the money order to pay for shipping".

So, she never read the message saying it was a check, apparently. Then never opened my envelope for like five days to check. THEN gets to the PO to ship the birds, discovers the 'issue' and just doesn't tell me, leaving me to have no idea what's going on and have to message her about it, at which point only then does she tell me of the 'problem'.

See, this is why I don't like to send checks for birds. People need to get with the times and set a PayPal account up. It takes literally five minutes. And it's been around since 1998 so it isn't some crazy new thing.

Edit: Oh good, I just checked and my bank will actually charge me a fee to cancel this check. After I've pointed out to the seller that she okayed the check without paying attention, apparently, she said she's just mailed it back from the PO. We'll see, I guess. Hopefully it shows up in a few days.

Either way, I'm done with this seller, I think. I was considering sending a money order at first, but after typing all this out and reading it back to myself, yeah, no.

aww man! I'm sorry. It take a lot of patience waiting for new birds.

done, as in not going to be getting the birds? I cant blame you If that's the case. Hopefully you can find a new, better, (and maybe cheaper!) pair.

Yeah, done as in I'm not gonna buy anything from her. It was getting a bit too late into the summer for me to be comfortable with shipping anyway. By the time a money order got there...nope.

The people who ask for money orders or Western Union like this say they do it because they're afraid of getting ripped off. But doing it that way means that instead of the seller taking some risk, the buyer has to take ALL the risk - I could send a money order or wire them money, and they could just run off with it and never send me birds.

PayPal is better. There's protection on both ends, the money transfer is instant, and if you don't like the fees, you can just charge a little extra to cover them. Plus, there's no way for misunderstandings like this to occur, where a buyer sends a payment that the seller agreed to, then the seller just doesn't send birds because they apparently can't or don't read.

I don't think I'll try to buy pigeons by check again. Either they take PayPal, or I don't buy from them. They might say they want it sent like that because they're old fashioned, but I'm finding these breeders online so clearly they have internet, and PayPal's been around for 22 years, it's not new.

Anyway, this will conclude my rant on the subject, lol.
