Pigeon Talk

I will say that I wouldn't recommend fantails with calls. Other breeds of pigeons would be fine but fantails can't see behind them well and calls can be naughty sometimes. Especially if theres water! But pigeons don't need a ton of space so you could build a loft or two!
Dang. I'll take that into consideration.
I did wonder what the possibility would be they could get drowned in the pond. :hmm

Hopefully . . in the near future. :) we are still working on expanding my call duck palace right now and I need to get rid of some extra drakes. And I'm still thinking on how I could make a loft in the call duck palace. . once that's all worked out I'll get more serious looking for some. :fl

Pigeons would do ok with just a small area sectioned off. Did you see slorider’s new loft build video? Your DH could add something like that inside the palace. Then have an opening that they could come out into the palace when you are there to watch. :D

I’ve thought about that too, if I were to let mine out into the duck area. They like to bathe, but I don’t know about deeper water. :idunno

Can a pigeon drown?

Congratulations - pigeons are a blast. Did you get Indian Fantails or American Fantails? Can't tell from the pics.
I could offer a couple of basic pointers. First, no mice in the coop. Pigeons are very sensitive to the pathogens they carry. Also, make sure they have CLEAN water with no poop in it.
Parlor Rollers tend to be very flighty, and when they get scared they start rolling, so you want to keep things nice and calm around them. I'm sure I don't need to say this, but never let children play with them. Too much rolling is bad for them. And you may need fosters if you plan to breed them - they usually are not good egg sitters and tend to break their eggs.
Have fun!
Can a lone pigeon live by itself? How do you tell a boy from a girl. I assume they molt once a year

I would never give up hope on your birds I have had them return months after I had written them off. It is my experience that after 3 days if they have not returned chances are they are lost.
It is heartbreaking to loose birds as I can attest.

You done everything right in my opinion.

Your squeakers should only be imprinted to one loft and that should be yours.
Once you have been a fancier as long as I have you develop the attitude that it cost the same to feed a good bird as it does a poor one.
What really breaks your heart is when a predator such as a weasel gets into your loft and kills every one of your birds. I know that feeling as well.

On another NOTE

One thing that always stood me in good stead when it comes to sexing pigeons.

If it lays an egg it is FEMALE ♀!
Haha, do I have no way of knowing if mine is a female or male. Do the males crow? Lol

No I didn't see that video. Was it posted here somewhere?

They can live by themselves but it is alot better for there to be another. Just like chickens they are flock birds. It is very difficult to sex them. I have only just found out my original bird, Boomer, is actually male not female like I was told! It is easier and more apparent if you have a couple as the males act more dominant and if they pair up the male will drive the hen to a nest.

Can a pigeon drown?
In all the years that I have been raising pigeons I have lost only one young squeaker to drowning. I had the bottom of a 45 gallon plastic barrel with 5 gallons of water it in it. I came out later and found a young fully fledged squeaker that had drowned in the barrel.

It has only happen to me that one incident.

Can a lone pigeon live by itself? Yes and so can a human but how would "YOU" like it? How do you tell a boy from a girl. I assume they molt once a year True to different degrees.

There are as many different breeding pens as there are pigeon fanciers

Mistakes can be made no matter which method you choose to sex your pigeons.
I find the best way to sex a bird is to ask another pigeon. I have made mistakes myself thus gay pairing. Not so much lately as the decades pass. I figure I can guess the gender of a pigeon once it has fledged with about 80% accuracy even higher if it is an adult bird.

Check out the link the pigeon bowing and circling is the bird walking is ♀. Males tend to be more iridescent and a bit larger than the ♀ as a rule of thumb.
One think for sure if it lays an egg it is "FEMALE" ♀!
