Pigeon Talk

@Pyxis did you come to a resolution with the lady? I'd still be sceptical about buying from her now though.

No, we're currently at an impasse over whether or not the silver is a hen. Color genetics say it must be, but behavior tells me it's a cock, and it's also not banded, so who's to say she didn't mix it up with another bird?

Oh well, DNA results will come back next week and I'll know for sure.

I know this thread is for pigeons but I figured I would tell you this. One of my serama eggs hatched!!! You may wonder why I'm so exited it's because what this baby chick went threw. First one of the eggs began to leak it was clearly rotten but since we were supposed to clean the incubator really soon we didn't remove the egg. Since it had been 3 days since they were supposed to hatch I stopped putting water in the incubator I was going to clean it out yesterday but I was to busy. It's a good thing I didn't clean it out because last night the chick hatched.

And technically, all the colors are sex-linked from what I understand. Red ash, blue, brown at least. When crossing colors, you want to choose a female of a more dominant color than the male, so the offspring would be different colors. Males would be mom’s color, females would be dad’s color. If the male has the more dominant color, then all the offspring are the same color, that of the male. (The males would be carrying the females color though)

This is my understanding as well. All pigeons carry only one color allele(hens) or two color alleles(cocks). There are only three colors, brown, blue(which is technically black), and ash-red. Brown least dominant and ash-red most dominant. Colors are sex linked. So far, simple. It gets complicated when you factor in the other alleles like spread, pale, dilute, recessive red, recessive white, almond, etc. that affect how the colors are expressed. Some of these are sex-linked and some not. So for example, Ron's white beautys are genetically brown, blue or ash-red.

Almond seems pretty complicated to me. There is quite a bit to be said about almond but one take away is that a bird may be genetically almond and not have the appearance(phenotype) of what most fanciers call 'almond'. Genetically almond squabs have short, sparse down - but so do pale and dilute squabs.

I DO NOT have a good grasp on almond but after reading the article WV linked to I wonder if a cock may carry one almond allele and based on the genetic color and other factors the bird may not look almond. So just looking at the appearance you couldn't say it must be a hen bc it doesn't look almond.
edit @Pyxis - I vote the silver is male. Almond is a dilution factor. Silver is a dilute 'color'.

That was lucky! Glad it's doing OK!

So this baby is from the egg you thought was rotten? Or no?
I love my seramas, so thanks for sharing! Congrats on the hatch! Any more left to hatch?
I’m going to set a bunch of seramas, bantam cochins, cream legbar, and olive egger eggs this weekend.
