Pigeon Talk

Well another weekend over and it not been without excitement! I have been trap training the two new ones and all was going great. This afternoon I put the piebald in the cage and the ash red in her nest. I let the rest out. When they started to come down I let the piebald out and it flew about wonderfully with the rest.......until some resident feral from up the way decided to come visiting. Needless to say all mine came in and he wouldn't. Well he ended up flying off with the ferals and is currently about six houses up on the roof. Well the traps closed. I'm not wasting my time trying to get him back....because....the ash red has layed an egg! She seems happy and content with her lover boy #66!

And it looks like I have become the home ground to a couple of woodpigeons that seem to love having punch ups on top of the chicken coop!

and in front of the loft!

And clears any spilt seed!
And don't try to stroke a broody bantam unless you want to lose a finger! My broodies are all on rotation at present!

Sorry about the pie. But congrats on the egg! Your letting her sit, right? Don't worry, I think the pie will come back. I have been known to say that though.

Nice broodies!

So I've got a question, when you want to let a bird sit,but your loft is getting full, why don't people just pull one egg? If it's warm atleast.

Yeah I'm letting her sit! Hopefully another egg tomorrow. Squeak has been on her two for about a week now. So long as they all hatch that will put me back up to 16 birds which is about where I want to be at the moment. The pie is on its own now. No more bed and board for that one! I don't think it will go far but it was always a bit wild it should do fine!
About removing eggs, if I remove one egg chances are that they would still lay another. I could switch one with a plastic but unless I only wanted one baby from the pair there's not much point. When I'm back up to numbers I'll just remove and switch both eggs.

Happy Fathers Day to all you dads!

Trip now has 2 eggs, so I’m going to have to order new bands.

Noticed a couple days ago that Galaxy isn’t getting fed very well, so I brought her inside to tube feed today. Had a duckling inside too, that keeps getting left behind by its group, so I gave it some extra vitamins too. I banded Garbo, but it’ll be a while before Galaxy can hold one on.

And Bugsy’s baby is hanging in there. It seems soooo tiny!

Your red hen and 66 make a lovely pair! :love Was 66 a bachelor or did he lose a mate? And I'm fascinated by those wood pigeons! The closest species to the pigeon here is the mourning dove. :hmm If you hung a box on your fence do you think the wood pidges would nest there?

Good luck with your broodies!

:love Such sweet little guys! So you tube feed? Since you know how - it's the most efficient way I think... How old is Bugsy's chick now?

Today was our annual family reunion. This year I brought Olive and she was the life of the party. A few months ago when I started taking her out she was very shy of strangers touching her but now she is friendly with anybody as long as they are calm. The children all loved her and were very gentle stroking her. She even went on people's shoulders! We were there four hours and with a few breaks in her carrier to eat and drink she did great and enjoyed a sunny if cool summer day. The more she gets comfortable with new people the more I think she'd be a wonderful therapy animal. She thrives on attention and even a bunch if loud playful kids running about didn't stress her at all.

#66 was paired with #65 who was his sister. She is one of the ones that went missing. I can't wait to see what the babies will look like. I really hope that some red comes out. The woodpigeons are in abundance here. They have a nest in the tree at the end of my garden and they're forever flapping around and scrapping over territory! We have alot of doves too. The ones here are collared doves. They make are weird noise as they fly over!

So no news from Lincoln? How many birds have you lost in the past few weeks? Aren't you almost guaranteed to get some red since they will be sex-linked?

I love your wood doves! You are so lucky! We only have mourning doves in my area, except one time I saw a pair of ringneck doves. I don't know if they are native. @Serin do you know?

I think I might have a pair of racers! I'll post a pic later. I also just finished pouring some more concerete for the foundation of the new loft.
