Pigeon Talk

Sorry, I'm not sure what the dose would be - I've actually never dealt with egg binding, so it's out of my area of experience.

I have a question, though. In good news, I put some hay in with the pigeons and the cream yellow bar hen is building a nest :D But so far it's not a really good nest, lol. Will she shore it up as she gets closer to laying? Or should I add some more hay myself?
Is she building the nest in a nest bowl? Some build good nests, most of mine I have had to help by adding to it. lol I have usually added some wood shavings to it before the chicks hatch.

She is building it in the bowl at least, lol. But she's just brought a couple pieces of hay in and a chicken feather and that's it, so it's still pretty bare.

Usually the male brings the material and the hen arranges it. I find that a few hand fulls of pine shavings makes a decent base for the babies to rest on and enough traction to avoid splayed leg.

The tumblers are here! They are gorgeous and I love them!

The hen laid an egg in the box on the way here. Opinions about what to do? For now I put a nest in with them and put the egg in it, do you think they will take care of it? Or should I just pull it and try incubating it?
Why not put it in a nest bowl? Usually they start sitting when the second egg is laid. You really, REALLY want the parents to feed and raise the babies so imo artificial incubation should be avoided. This is the time of year for breeding so they should lay another clutch soon if this egg doesn't work out.
Ps Let's see a pic... I know you posted one from the seller but I want more! :)

If you knew it was the first egg ... which you don't... you could hold it indoors til the second one is laid, then return it so it doesn't freeze. Depends on how cold it is there. I think that's what sour did with his shot glasses in the bedroom.:D

I did put a nest in there and we'll see if they take care of the egg. If not, I'll go ahead and try hatching it myself. Perks of being a veterinary nurse, I can take a baby to work with me and feed it if I need to :) They're in my garage, so no worries about the egg freezing.

No pictures of the new ones yet, but here are my frillbacks:

The hen in is front. Grumpy face in the back there is the cock. Also pictured is the empty nest bowl, which is now slightly less empty after they added some hay, lol.

So on another thread I mentioned one of my hens was missing last night. Today I found out what happened to her. She was hit by a car over at the lumberyard, witnessed by one of the employees. They go there for the grit. They said the car was going very slow so she should have been able to get away, but I have seen my birds expecting cars to yield for them before.:barnie At least I know it wasn't a hawk.

Horrible! :hugs

Ok. Me pigeon is in the house to stay warm and keep blood flowing, which I read helps. She's in the bath now, enjoying watching me. It is slightly warm. Going to add calcium to drinking water, or would it be better to put straight down throat? Any other ideas?

Any progress?
I think with chickens, folks just crumble a tums on top of some food and let them eat it.

Wow they are pretty. Can’t wait to see the new ones too. Funny that she laid an egg in the box!

I have gathered leaves, small sticks, straw, loose feathers, etc. from the yard, and left piles close to the nest, but let them build the nest themselves by choosing whatever they want. They actually even use stray chicken feathers that float in there from neighboring pens, which surprised me.

Oh Trip and Rocky have 2 eggs again, and Duff/Breezy’s babies are growing like weeds. I probably need to band them soon. I’ve been dealing with the ducklings so much, I haven’t monitored the pigeons as much. Bonnie and Clyde have been courting a lot, I expect eggs from them again soon.

And I think I’ve settled on Dazzle and Dipsy for Duffs 2 squeakers.
