Pigeon Talk

not sure what type of breed.

am just thinking of maybe creating a loft sort of thing (quite big) so i could raise quite a few and harvest the odd younger ones for meat, to the point of keeping a steady population.
Chickens are easier imo. It doesnt take long to reach slaughter weight and you get more meat...and eggs. Unless you're deadset on eating pigeons...:idunno

Alright guys! 49 days till october 26th! The Louisville pigeon show! Is anyone planning\hoping to go? I will be there!
I know it's a ways for most... Probably to far for CCUK... :hmm:p @WVduckchick ? Your kinda close, 5 hours maybe? @cavemanrich I bet there will be some white homers, highflyers, ferals and such there!
I am going to the NPA championship show at Newark on October 13! Its a bit close at only 20mins from me!

hello everyone am back again with more questions about pigeons.

first off wondering, is it possible to make a almost 100% self-sustaining pigeon system?
like am thinking how feral pigeons have no issue living year around. is it possible for a system with non-feral pigeons?

like am thinking about a system where you could free range? the pigeons let them go out and forage there own food and water like 75% of the time. and have them come back and nest in an area i want them to be. so i could collect the young ones for meat.
I think technically you would just have a flock if ferals if you tried to make them self sustaining. My uncle in law from my wife's side kept king pigeons for meat. He found there was quite a good market for selling them too. He didn't make his millions from them but they paid for themselves. And you get alot more meat from a king.

I'm not likely able to make it this year,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, but if I did,,,,, then I would have to mosey on down to Nashville to hang with my DD. And if it happened so,,, I would rendezvous with my DD, and your Family somewhere designated like a McDonald's for ice-cream sundaes.

And you get alot more meat from a king.
I don't think Kings would survive feral.
How meaty do you think these are???

The pigeon,,, not the Queen.

BP...I didn't realize you were so close! I'm not going to Louisville. Sadly. No. I currently do not have pigeons. My grandfather had a loft when I was a kid. He was part of some flying group. It was all pretty exciting as a kid when they flew them. I want pigeons. Just haven't pulled the trigger "yet". So much to learn.

I can't go anywhere! It is my dd's birthday, we went to a farm park and they had fantails. They were looking to rehome some....unfortunately we weren't in my car so I didn't have a carrier. So I went back today and got the girls a couple of boyfriends!
