Plastic Bin Brooder, and preventing fire with heat lamp?

Think about it: heating pads are designed to be in contact with human skin for several hours at a time. Can you lay your hand on the heat lamp reflector and leave it there for even 2 minutes? Every single year there are reports of houses and coops burning down, people being killed by heat lamps. Just last spring, when I was at the feed store, the employees were telling me about a lady who died in a house fire b/c she was brooding chicks in the house with a heat lamp. How often do we hear about a fire being started by a heating pad? Even from an economical sense, a heating pad makes sense. They run intermittently. When they are in the "on" phase, the biggest pad draws 150W at it's highest setting. (But the pad used for a MHP system must have the bypass switch that allows it to be on 24/7 instead of shutting it'self off after 2 hours of continuous use.) I doubt that they are drawing full power even 25% of the time. And they are usually running at medium or low settings. So, while there is an initial cash output to buy the heating pad, the decreased power consumption quickly offsets that. Add to that the increased safety, for both the home and coop, and the safety and better environment for the chicks, and the heating pad system wins every single argument.

No, the wire running through the brooder is not an issue. It is set up so the wire goes up the brooder wall. And the chicks do not bother the wire. The pad, and the wire frame it sits on are both enclosed in a fabric "pillow case" of sorts, so the chicks don't even have contact with the pad. This helps keep the pad cleaner (though my Sunbeam XPress pad is MACHINE WASHABLE!!!!) and prevents the chicks from crawling between the pad and the wire frame.

Okay thanks for clarifying, the problem is I don’t know when I’ll be able to get the heating pad, but I’ll try as soon as possible. Also in the link you shared she stuck something over the heat pad to cover it, and I don’t know where to get that from....

Any cloth will do. The last time I covered a pad/frame, I didn't want to do any sewing. So I took my hot melt glue gun and a piece of old sheet. Wrapped the sheet around the pad and wire frame like it was a giant gift package, and used the hot melt to "Wrap" the pad/frame "package". @Blooie has an article and a thread in her signature that tell how to put the MHP together, and how to use it.

Looked at the article, gonna try my best to get a piece of wire and heat pad as soon as possible. Thank you!

I've made 2 of these. Got the second one I used zip ties to attach the heating pad to a rack, then covered that with black vinyl hot glued in place, yes gift wrap style. Worked great and can be wiped down as needed.

Thank you for sharing, I got the heat pad. I will be setting it up tomorrow when I am able to get a piece of wire. Also the setting on it are just high med and low, so how am I supposed to know what to put it on,
