Please Help! Hen acting listless, has a pale comb and diarrhea

OH I am so SORRY Bella!!    I feel so badly for you. You sure loved her and she had a wonderful life with you and her flock. I truly hope your heavy heart can heal soon. 

Thank you Leyla. I'm going to really miss her.

Now I'm worried about the rest of my flock, do you think what she had was contagious? Since she seemed to be getting better and seemed lonely I let the rest of my flock free range with her for a little bit yesterday.

Should I let the flock see her body before we bury her?

Sorry for your loss... Might be a good idea to have your vet look at her like you said he/she could.

I know how hard to is to lose them.  It takes time not to look for them in the flock. 

As enola has mentioned, it would be a good idea to worm everybody in your flock now. Free rangers are susceptible to worms. And if she indeed did die from an overload, no doubt the rest of the flock is just as loaded. As for other pathogens that might be contagious, it is hard to say unless you had a vet do a necropsy on her. I wouldn't be too concerned she was contagious. Most diseases make themselves apparent through secondary infections like runny noses, breathing issues, diarrhea and other things.

I would not let the others see her. I did that once and the flock sort of freaked out. They don't understand this sort of thing so it is best they think she just wandered off somewhere. If she had a good buddy, they may mourn the loss. I have seen this happen in my flocks.  

Okay, I could probably worm the others. The vet thinks it was probably a bacterial infection, possibly of the GI tract. It still could have been worms or something she ate though.

Okay, I won't let the others see her. They're all acting so confused about where she went, especially one of my Rhode Island Reds.

Thanks Kathy. We're not going to bring her body in now, but if any of my other chickens start acting funky we'll bring it in. We put it in the freezer for now. (Plus, I can't bury her today, I'm just not ready yet. )

The recent loss of my Miss Molly had two of my birds very confused. The flock leader went looking for her for days, checking out the nest boxes, looking in the run after dark etc.... Miss Molly's best buddy mourned for months. Sat on the roost bar, depressed, ate very little, stopped talking, stopped laying, and she went into a heavy molt. She refused to go out to free range for months. 3 months later she began talking again as she usually does.

Collect a bunch of fresh poop from all of your girls, place in baggie, stir well, take to vet and have them do a fecal float. If they find worm eggs or coccidia they can advis the proper treatment.

You might want to try contacting a vet and getting metronidazole if she has blackhead it's about the only thing that will treat it you also have to deworm her to kill the worm that causes the disease panacur or safeguard are good for Cecil worms if you lose the bird you can take her to a state lab and have a necropsy done relatively cheap
