It's my understanding that with this breed, males will be barred. So I think you may have a Sapphire Gem, but a cockerel.

I've seen a lot of posts where people get cockerels instead of pullets with this breed. It's a shame for the people who can't keep them. They're beautiful birds.

You SHOULD be able to tell at birth male from female. If you see a white dot on the top of the head of the chicken, that will indicate it's male.

Mistakes happen! I think there was such a rush to get chicks out to the public because they were all sold out that they were less attentive.

I wondered that as well. Between the egg shortage and chick craze and the instability over the last couple of years, if mistakes weren't made in a rush.

I'm fortunate at our TSC the employees seem to really know what they're talking about and are quick to tell you if they think one is male or not. I've heard other people say they aren't allowed to give their thoughts, which I can see being a store policy. But they will in our store, in my experience.
