Having two guard dogs to watch and circle prey in tandem is the way to go in a big field like yours!
I have to pick the time of day (heat), but my hubby thinks I'm a little strange for taking my chair, my drink and a book,,,,,(don't do my reading)...and sit out to watch/talk to my ladies!![]()

If the coop is in the back 40 getting wet is a moot point. However a shelter over the nestbox to keep it from getting rained on when the lid is opened would still be a good idea. A wet nestbox is a health issue.Really nice job on that tractor w/attached runNice to see you even have the chicken guard dogs pacing a patrol around it all
I would like to make one comment though... those roost 2 x 4s should be turned 90 degrees either way so the 3.5" side is facing up/down. That would be much more comfortable for your birds as their feet aren't really designed to grip to roost. Is that a human predator I see ducking behind the coop from the right side?
Oh, almost forgot!
and welcome to the thread!![]()
As an afterthought, and in an attempt to beat Sylvester to the punchMaybe you could extend that roof on back there so when you go out to collect eggs in the rain, you won't get a wet head
Of course, it seems to me that if you're going out in the rain to collect eggs, you're gonna get a little wet regardless... Especially if that tractor is parked somewhere on the back 40.![]()
FLAT... no angles...just plain 'ol FLAT.![]()
Cute coop. Does it have a back door for cleanout?
Here is ours (you can see our old little one in the background)

Hi again everybody. We're making (SLOW) progress on the chicken house expansion project. All the materials for the run are out and ready to go, and we finally finished our little homemade addition to the coop kit. Everything is slow going when you have a toddler and just the two of us to build/look after her. We plan on getting the run started tomorrow, and hopefully using our guest's spare hands on Father's day (having a cookout) to get it put together. We can do the 4 panels before that. The digging and leveling and skirting can be done once the run is knocked together. Hopefully we will be able to move it back and forth with just two of us.

The boards are shrinking, we will have to put strips of wood over the cracks this fall.
I was expecting a huge disaster, but our expansion came out OK. The front part is the kit. This view is from the back/side.
Matilda approves!
we have foxes, deer, possems, you name it we have it, we will have the fence buried and I am not sure what else he is going to do with bottom, we do know we have to do something at the gate, that is where they always get in as for the amount of chickens we have had them for years, when children were small they wanted a few so we got a few, lol ended up with 75 after they started haven babies, now we are alone just me and dh and I found a chicken in a field covers with snow, it fell off a truck. so I went back and got it, that was 6 yrs ago she had to have a friend so we got 20 hens then got one roo and off we went, only had something get chickens twice in all that time.
LOVE the colors!!!
