Puhlese!! Help us decide a direction?!?

Svart Hona and Ayam Cemani are both supposed to be all-black, single-comb chickens who lay light-colored eggs. I understand that there must be some differences, but they sure share some really obvious similarities! So it might not make sense to have both of them.

For every breed on your "maybe" list, I can think of excellent reasons to include it, so I really don't know what to suggest! The Lemon Cuckoo Niederrheiner look cool when I look them up, I've always liked the color of Silver Laced Wyandottes, Barnevelders are so pretty and lay dark eggs, Swedish Flower hens are neat for the variety of colors...
The original poster might want to do a bit of market research in their general area. What traits and colors are people interested in? Are they looking for a lot of eggs or looking for chickens that could be pets?

Melanistic black chickens are a trend now, and people who are into them might want both ACs and Svart Honas.

On the other hand, if people in the general area show more interest in something else, might want to go with another breed.

That's awesome thank you, I will explore those! I love sharing our little chicken adventure!

I am partial to the SFH. They have been the sweetest chicks and protective even of me except I had just one go through a bad teenager phase for a bit. She is over it now. They have struggled some in the heat we had this year in MS but it has been the worst I have seen it in 52 summers so I believe actually they did very well in reality for cold weather tolerant birds. They are very sought after FYI so I feel you would sell your chicks easily. They are gorgeous birds.

Also- I have Cream Legbars which have also been very sweet and heat tolerant and again I have one who is an absolute pig in the bunch who makes a mess at the feeder and is awful to hand feed. She is a beautiful bird though just goofy. Piggy piggy. Her mind is on food all the time. Tapeworm. Jk.
I am so attracted to the looks of the SFH, it is great to hear a good report on them!

Thank you, I will check them out. My boys are the big fans of the melanistic and I'm debating if there is any advantage to having both kinds.

I'm kinda on the same page, I think the AC and the Svart Honas are a little too similar.

Well when you do decide on the breeds, study the quality traits in each breed so you know what to look for when buying from other breeders.

Most people want high quality true to breed chickens, so that's something to consider. Good luck with your venture.

I'm located in Western Colorado.
I try to follow follow breed standards on the ones that are defined. The others I look for a general quality representative, well colored, good confirmation, correct size, dispositions.
I love the laced breeds, it may be a fun goal.

Great!

I've got brahmas for the first time this year - seem good, so far!

Laced birds - so amazing to see a really nicely laced bird, male or female! In any color - the lacing can be so striking. We have a SLW with poor, poor, lacing (even after a fall molt) - so I know what that looks like. We have GLW hens with decent lacing, but I don't think they'd wow anyone. We showed our GLW male and the judge indicated he had poor lacing, but it looked so good as compared with the really bad lacing of the SLW, that I didn't think that would be the main comment - he had a bad toe too, and I thought that would be the main complaint! However, I've seen a few really beautiful laced birds and they are striking!

My boys and I are carefully building our flocks with the goal of selling hatching eggs and raising chicks in mind.
So pretty please tell us your thoughts on the last three breeds to focus on and build.
We are also open to other suggestions if we are missing a great idea. Thank you for your thoughts and Input.

How about Icelandic or Bresse? There are very limited breeders to get those two kinds of chickens from.

They're really cool selections, but they're in Canada.
