Quietest, calmest, tamest breeds?

this is a good thread..

I have had this same question -- looking for a very quiet chicken. I have two Rhode Island Reds and they are noisier than I thought chickens would be, esp. compared with the Buff Orp. and Ameraucana I had already. They squawk a lot during the day. I'd like to add one or two more hens, diff. breed if possible, to the little flock, and my neighbors have been very tolerant so far...so I don't want to repeat the RIR noise if I can.

Yes, thanks to everyone who replied! Great anecdotal info which is MUCH more useful than the lists elsewhere on the web.

I'm thinking I'll just get 12 or so and cull the noisy ones (we'll only need 4, so I'll prob cull 6 to begin with).

I have 5 chickens (in order from quietest to loudest) barred rock, new hampshire red, silkie, buff orpington, and the loudest by far is my white plymouth rock.

I have a small flock of mixed layers. Out of them the Delaware is by far the loudest and bossiest! She is always squaking. The next loudest would be the barred rock (still my favorite though). Next would be the speckled sussex. She is noisy and the least friendly (hatchery stock). I have two young lavender orpingtons in the grow out pen who are the nosiest chicks ever. One is docile but the cockeral is very flighty. My two polish hens are very quiet and docile. The one is so sweet and will fly right up onto my shoulder or hop into my lap whenever I am in their run. The other polish is very sweet and quiet but kind of slow. LOL. She always has to be put in the coop and if anything gets moved you have to show her where it is. PS THESE are all hatchery stock other than the lav orps. Heratige may be different. Usually heratige birds have much better temperaments!

Now my silkies on the other hand are almost silent! All I ever hear from the hens is cooing! My roosters crow but are nowhere near as bad as the seramas were! They are the sweetest things ever too! You can reach right under broodies, pick up anyone, they all eat out of your hands, and love to be pampered. If you can onlly have less than say 6, they may not produce enough eggs for you.

Hope this helps a little!

I'm surprised no one has mentioned ameraucanas!! My two are super sweet, always hopping on visitors. One has a taste for earring backs though....

By FAR - the quitest, calmest and tamest chickens I have ever owned are the Gold Laced Wyandottes I have. They are a joy!

The tamest chickens that I have owned is a salmon faverolle ". Her name is dally and she is soooo tame and sweet. She is quit most of the time.

I got a speckled Sussex,a golden Wyandotte,a barred rock, and a black frizzle Cochin hen as chicks at the same time, I handle them the same. They are now 5 weeks old and the Specled Sussex is the calmest with me but all of them seem to trust me and come to me, when I go to pick up my barred seems the most worried. I did also get a Black Copper Marans rooster with them and he is calm with me he still has a fuss if I pick him up. I love them all very much.
