Raccoon in duck coop

Sorry for this very off-topic thing but I find it interesting that it seems like most people have a gun. Gun laws are different here, and the only people who should have them are hunters and police I think.
Your local criminal element will be happy to hear that. I hope you never have to encounter any of them

live traps from farm store can be effective but in my experience with raccoons are 1 time use. we live inside city limits as well but have a .25 cal pellet rifle for yard use. very effective for dispatching raccoons and opossums as well as controlling yard squirrel population. (much more humane than some trying to drown them)

One time use? Why? I’ve trapped many in mine. Been using the same traps for years.
(Actually accidentally trapped more squirrels than other varmits this year, I release the squirrels, but possums and raccoons aren’t so lucky here)

I'd def say that raccoon was sick, we had a rabies epidemic here in our part of the US about 10 yrs ago and that is just how they act very placid and relaxed after they have had it a while. It was very scary because you never knew when you were going to walk up on one or have one walk up on you. Living in the woods we encountered a few. We did not go far with out a gun. And because of one coming so close to our home in broad daylight my dh had to shoot it we had to have our dog and cat revaccinated, if they haven't had a up to date Rabies vac they are put down. Rabies isn't something to take lightly. Even cows came down with it and heard of a ground hog also not the animals you usually hear about.

I hope the OP has checked out how that raccoon got inside her coop and has fixed the problem. And that this one has wandered off and died. I'd def call animal control and tell them about him and how it was acting.

I think people should have the right to own guns with certain exceptions. I live on a mountain in the middle of nowhere. I own a rifle for protection and for my animals safety. I do occasionally hunt also.
A few years back we had two prisoners escape in Ny and I was glad I had my gun. They would have had no problem killing me and whatever else.

Anyways, I use a live bait trap from TSC. I have caught several raccoons in about 6 months. It's funny how they curl up and look at you with those puppy dog eyes. It does make me sad for a minute, but then I think about what would happen if they got to my chickens and ducks and I deal with them.

I'm glad you got the raccoon, next time I would call the police. It was likely sick and they would know how to deal with it for public safety.
It might come back.
Stay safe!

My husband used to do the dispatching for me, until one day we caught a raccoon while he was out of town. I had to deal with it. It looked so sweet and pitiful, like you said, the puppy dog eyes. I was even considering letting it go. Until I started dragging the trap to the woods, and it got MEAN! Problem solved. :p

Good for you:clap. I would like to say it gets easier, but it hasn't for me yet.

Last time I had one in the trap my dog found it first. You could here it growling and going on!
What was kind of funny was that my chickens had passed by it maybe 30 min before.
I could just imagine them shaking their tail feathers at it, going nah nah nah nah nah.
After I dispatched it, my girls came running for the blood :sick
I had to call the dog to chase them off till I could cover up the mess enough that they couldn't get it. Funny how sometimes it really is eat or be eat'n.
