I live in a countryside where the neighbors don't give a rip about their dogs roaming other peoples yards so that's probably where my problem arises.

I noticed you changed your signature by the way. I live in the country where I am surrounded by cornfields but my neighbors live far enough away that dogs couldn't possibly walk over here if they were pets, but the tom cats still come.

I had a hawk kill a Marans rooster while free ranging

My Buckeye rooster is tough. I don't know how good he is in combat with a hawk though. He sure keeps the other roosters in check, but he doesn't attack us. None of his sons have crowed yet despite being nearly four months old. I bet they're too scared of him.

My old Light Sussex hen was my guard bird. She would actually thrash ravens if they landed near the coop

Egyptian Fayoumis are rare, but they are not APA recognized unfortunately (I wish they were!). Most people seem to get them as free rare chicks.

Yup ... Have a black chicken for dinner! If we give 'em back their original job, maybe they won't be so rare. Let's see, if we price them a little more competitively, say $50 a bird, how much would my McChicken sandwich cost, then?
All joking aside, though, the novelty is wearing off a bit, so we'll likely see more in just a little while. Any guesses as to what the next super-rare get rich quick poultry is gonna be? I'm thinking that the Dong Tao, the one with the elephant legs, may catch on, but only to a select few who can deal with what looks like a serious case of bumblefoot overkill. There's got to be another super-star wannabe waiting in the ... please pardon the pun, here ... wings!

I wouldn't be surprised if Lakenvelder meat caught on. They are shaped just like a game bird and are delicious (and have blue legs)

It's the same with me but ALL my naibourds know if there dog comes within 20feet of my chicken coop then they know not expect there little guy to come home (I know it's not a nice thing but certain things have to be done to make sure ur prize very very expensive birds don't end up in a sheep dogs mouth

Well as much as I am tempted to give the dog a knockout after it kills a $500 bird I rather bring it to its owner and confront the guilty party in question.

My favorite rare breed is the Asil. I make mine free range. If they can't raise chicks out in the woods a couple years they aren't worth breeding. Saw a video from facebook recently of an asil hen doing what asil hens do best, protecting their chicks with their life if necessary. Not often necessary most things aren't that dedicated to the idea of chicken dinner to tangle with the Navy Seals of the chicken world. The one in the video was whooping a hawk. Not an isolated incident in talking to other breeders, and personal experience. Always interesting to see what they pummel to death defending their chicks. An older brood cock can take out things in the coon or possum class. I don't take chances with my breeders, but to get to that point, they must show survival instincts.
