Since 1 rooster needs 10 hens (generally) having too many roosters can cause damage to the poor hens. Plus roosters can be dangerous to people especially children. Once hormones hit them they start protecting their ladies from anything that comes near and isn’t a chicken. Like me. Since nothing else gets into the coop or run but me I’m the thing that the ladies need to be protected from. So I got attacked every time. My rooster now has a bachelor pad.

The problem that I have with leghorns is that one of the roos will slap my sleeping beagle a few times on the rear end with a fencepost, then allow himself to be chased by the dog until just past the end of the length of the dog's tie out then the dog almost hangs himself.

Ha the only time I can get close enough to my girls to pick them up is after they have gone to roost. Then I can check for mites, clip wings, do whatever I need to do. Otherwise all bets are off, they are way too, er, independent to be caught and handled.

well , I have them trained, I have a small kids rake and I herd them into the coop and close the door, then I can do what I need.

That was our Ziva, she is 15 months now - AND, this is our new boy Tony, he is 12 weeks / 3 months old

My picture is my Leghorn Opal. She is a sweet bird. I just treated her for bumblefoot, which was not on her pad, but on her toe. Took me a month to get rid of it! Anyways, as I treated her toe, I would cradle her like a baby in my arms, and she would fall asleep as I wrapped her little foot. She also lays an large to xtra large egg almost every day!
