Rant: Plastic bags

You could just tell them.
They are simply doing what they are trained to do

That is actually part of my point. I feel they should be trained to ask.

Faster for people to get through the line for them to automatically put them in bags instead of asking every customer. If you want to be different just say so.

I would be a little concerned about using reusable bags for meat, not all meat is packaged liquid proof and washing them after every trip to get meat seems tedious.

I'll admit, when I get meat, I will use the clear plastic bags that are offered at the meat counter. When I get home, I recycle those too. If they get gross, then I rinse them out first, let them air dry, then put them with the rest of the bags to be recycled. Seems tedius, but I don't have to do it often, and I think it makes a difference.

My state was the first in Australia to ban plastic bags at the checkout. You've either gotta pay for them, or bring your own bag nowadays. I thought it was ridiculous to put small items in them too, but at least now we have a massive build up of the things from before the ban to use as bin liners.

So how is the ban working out? have you guys noticed a decrease in the landfills?
ray's two cents :

It's about 50/50 for me. Sometimes they ask, sometimes they don't. If I don't want the bag, I tell them before they bag it. When we do get the bags, we re-use them for other things around the house.

I haven't got a clue. But certainly something good is resulting from it, because other states started to plan to introduce the ban soon after we put it in place. Canberra's the next one in line.

There are a lot of customers that cashiers have to deal with who WANT everything to be bagged. Even a single item. Likely because the customer wants to keep the item clean, help avoid dropping it, ect ect. Working in customer service means you are a lot more likely to get nasty looks for asking about something a customer feels they should already have, than giving them something extra they don't want.

The bags that blow around and are littering the road ways and water ways and killing animals make me disgusted too, but that isen't due to the bag in the first place, it's due to the moron who doesen't care and threw it there. And it's illegal.

I don't agree with the bans on bags themselves, because people should be able to choose to use them or not. Most people use them responsibly, so they need to stick with prosecuting the ones who don't.

We NEED those plastic bags in this house... with so many uses for them. Puppies. Cats. Hampster. Bathroom trash bins. We use so many that we ask to take extras at the stores quite often.
Otherwise we would be shelling out alot of money for some silly bags that are infrequently available in a handy size.

I always ask for plastic. I re-use them at home as trash can liners. There was a recent study on those reuseable ones that showed incredible amounts of bacteria, because apparently, people to not wash them often.

That's what we do -- we use them as trash can liners. Beats buying bags specifically designed for that purpose, when the plastic grocery bags work just fine.
