Recommendations for duck with laryngitis?

Yeah, I thought it was respiratory as well... they proved me wrong... also, many say gapes are rare, but they're not that rare... especially in ducks since gapes are carried by earthworms, snails and slugs... :hmm

Totally agree that they are probably not as rare as people think! From what I've been reading, the prevalence of gapeworm in wild birds is mostly unknown and the limited reports in livestock are likely because most farmed birds (i.e. chicken) are commercially raised and not truly free range where they would encounter infected worms, snails and slugs. Plus, there's no reporting system for backyard birds like ours to document how often it happens! I found a cool informative site: http://cal.vet.upenn.edu/projects/merial/Strongls/strong_4.htm

I might take a fecal sample into work (bio lab) and look at it under the microscope to see if I can find any of those eggs!!

Update: it’s amazing what a little ACV and heat lamp can do to aid the immune system! I’ve ordered meds and still watching closely, but after the first day of providing ACV in their water and offering a heat lamp for extra warmth Stormy started to get her voice back - a soft quack instead of just breathy rasps. Day two her voice is loud and almost back to normal :wee Thanks for all your help and I’ll feel better knowing I have both SafeGuard and Tylan50 on hand should anyone get sick again!

Awesome!

Loss of voice can be aspergiliosis. Has that been checked out? It is serious.

Carmella had laryngitis that went away after putting several drops of colloidal silver in her drinking water overnight for two nights. I ahd taken her to the vet to rule out worms or infection.

Sounds like you are on the right trail! Please keep us posted!

My female duck has lost her quack she's been mating with my drake and all of a sudden she has stopped quacking loud just uht uht noises

Hello duck gurus! I'm hoping for some sage advice. We have a mixed flock of two year-old Pekins (one female Daphne, one male Peep) and two 3-month female Swedish Blues (Puddles and Stormy). Peep the male Pekin has had a bit of a cough kinda like he's trying to clear his throat for 3-4 days (according to my husband, I haven't seen it myself so it's really quite infrequent). Now Stormy - one of our Swedes - has lost her voice similar to laryngitis where only raspy breaths come out. Everybody in our flock, chickens included, is acting normal otherwise. They're full of energy, eating and drinking well. Nothing unusual with their feces as far as I can tell. No drainage from the eyes or nares and no shaking of the head. There's a full baby pool of fresh water available for everyone.

From searching BYC, I'm considering that it might be...
- gapeworm (seems unlikely since they don't have any other symptoms)
- hardware obstructing the throat (seems unlikely that both would have it)
- respiratory illness (most likely?)

There seems to be a mix of medication options...
- ACV (started that tonight)
- dewormer like SafeGuard (most effective) or ivermectin
- pharmaceutical antimicrobials like Tylan, baytril, tetracycline, doxycycline, etc
- natural antimicrobials like oregano oil or colloidal silver

Aside from the ACV, which should I try next? Given that they are acting normal otherwise, is it safe to wait and see if the ACV alone does the trick? I'm in CA where we cannot access antibiotics over the counter from feed stores so the best I can do is order oregano oil, colloidal silver, or injectable Tylan (dosed for cattle) through Amazon. Beyond that I would have to try to find an avian vet.....
I have EXACTLY the same problem!!! One has a cough the other has laryngitis and they are miced peking and swedish blues! Thats why I am here. Did you come to any conclusion as to what it was? I will give them some colloidal silver tonight. Doing ACV already.

What about their bedding it’s important to keep it as clean and dry as possible because of mold spores. Aspergillosis can come from this. Let us know if the ACV( has to be with mother) and the silver helped. I don’t think I’d mix the 2 though. Maybe separate bucks for each.
