Ribh's D'Coopage

I have trouble figuring it out. My sense is Elizabeth may be top hen but I am basing that on one incident in the heat of summer when everyone was a bit grumpy and she lost her temper with Maggie (who is much larger) and jumped on her back and pecked her head.
Apart from that it all seems relatively chill except for Maggie going after the Little Princesses.
Maggie going after the littles is probably because she is #3. I find that whomever is last in the pecking order is the most aggressive when new hens are integrated. If Elizabeth is number 1, you have your pecking order. Watch them closely with that in mind and you might notice little things that give away that you are correct.

That makes so much sense...I thought I knew who was in charge, but then realized I had no idea! I felt sorry for my Salmon Faverolles, I took her off of the nesting box so she would get some food & water...she's definitely on the bottom...she couldn't hardly eat or drink! I might have to block them out tomorrow to give her a chance to eat & drink unmolested!
The same thing happened to Sydney. I had to supervise her breaks or Lilly, Sansa, and Aurora would not have allowed her a moments peace. It's never good when a hen at the bottom of the pecking order tries to hatch.

I took her off the nest this morning so she could get some food and water...I locked the other chickens out so she would be unmolested!
Later in the day I decided that she's been going through this long enough, so I made a temporary mini coop for her and moved her off of the nest! She has access to fresh water and plenty of food and the rest of the flock can come visit her in jail...:gig Hopefully this will break her broodiness quickly! We will be making the mini coop permanent when we have time...I will hopefully be getting 2 ISA Browns that will be 5-6 weeks old in a couple of weeks and this will be a good place to introduce them to the flock! :)

Yes, that is my working theory. But then odd things happen that make me rethink. So today, when they were all hanging together Elizabeth found a stink bug and Maggie snatched it from her and ate it. Pretty cheeky for #3.

So interesting. They are fascinating creatures.
Maggie is the only one who goes for the Little Princesses and they are terrified of her. But if you look closely it is more like a game to her - sometimes she is fine around them and sometimes she lands a peck but mostly she runs at them and sends them into a flurry of excitement and then just stops. If she was really serious she could do real harm but it is like she just likes to keep them on their toes!
Sounds a lot like Lilly. I swear she laughs everytime she scares another chicken. 😆

I only had three and I was too stupid to figure it out!
It can be difficult if you have three go along get along hens. Three Hattie's would be hard to separate by order.
