Here's another table of crime rates...

Murder rate is lower now than in 1960, rape and assault are higher. I would be willing to bet the higher rape rate is not due to more actual rapes taking place but to the increased reporting of rape. I would also guess that the assault charges include things now that wouldn't have gotten reported in 1960, such as domestic abuse and white on black or other minority violence. Raw numbers don't say much...

Freedom? Just thinking about the people that can't keep chickens unless the government says so! I understand sometimes there needs to be rules in some super packed citys. How about the people that get fined for not mowing there lawn and the grass gets a little deep?(read that on a different thread)

Or in my area people not being able to build on there own property without first paying over $15000 in fees and permits to the local government? (True story)
Just a few ideas... and I think that prejudice is wrong in any way and that the 50s where not perfect... just wish somethings would go back to the way they where its just my OP! Sorry to be off topic!

Crime shifts in areas but since violent crime per population has gone down a few things have happened. Crime is more well known due to modern media so it seems like there is more of it. People are still just as likely not to be accosted when walking hoe in rural areas but they tend not to walk alone without weapons because they are more aware of what could happen when in the 50's people were less aware of what could occur.

also as population rises so does crime. more people means more criminals. that is why you look at crime per population. while population has risen crime has not risen as fast as population which means violent crime per population is less. example 100 people and ten people commit a crime.
then you have a thousand people10 years later and 20 people commit a crime. while it is ten more crimes than ten years ago, the percentage is less because there are 900 extra people.

so while an area may have had less crime, than now, the area probably also has an increase in population. mean while places in cities like Detroit still had high crime even in the 50's

suburbs and HOA are just weird IMO.

I have been ripped off about a dozen times over the past 20 or so years and I personally have reported about 4 or 5 of them. They raised my deductible on my homeowners policy so I quit filing claims also. I have taken other measures on the last few times.

I am going to calmly post this: There is NOT religious freedom in schools. Prayer is not allowed no matter what the religion. When I was in grade school and I got in a fight, it got broken up and we usually ate lunch together. When my son was in grade school he was not allowed to defend himself for fear of being expelled.

There is no one time period in history that was perfect, but I can tell ya from experience, the 60's were a heck of a lot easier for kids that it is now. Between big brother having their nose in our lives clear down to school officials that either won't or can;t do anything for our children BECAUSE of big brother's nose.

There have been improvements over time. A few. However, racial lines are still there, bullying is not any better than it was, in fact it is worse because it used to be about an argument and now it is about ganging up and being cool.

I had to defend my son in school for putting a bully in his place. They apologized.

I see the difference in what is now called the age of enlightenment and the good old days. I prefer the good old days when you did not have bars on windows and could leave valuables out and not fear losing them.
