No person of this country should ever say that. "Most people turn out alright and the country keeps going". We can't just sit behind and watch as it all falls apart.

In post #67 many birds states "I don't really believe in stuff like ADHA or ADD." Nobody knows everything about everything. However, even people who are otherwise pretty well informed seem to want to discount or deny the seriousness or sometimes even the existence of mental and emotional illnesses. It's as though they believe that the mind is something separate from the physical body. The truth is that the "mind" is one function of the brain ( functions are voluntary movements, involuntary functions, intelligence, physical senses, emotions, etc.). The brain is an organ and like any organ it doesn't always function perfectly and the result can be a variety of "illnesses" such as paralysis, low intelligence, depression, schizophrenia, blindness, deafness, ADHD, and many others. One might as well say "I don't believe in diabetes or heart attacks or ulcers or liver failure, etc." I think that many people want to deny mental illnesses due to fear. After all if you lose your arm or leg or an eye or so forth you are still"you", if however you lose your mind then the "you" is gone. If a person admits that the brain can misfunction then that is to admit that it could happen to them. That is very frightening. To counter this fear some want to pretend that mental illness doesn't exist. That way they feel safe.
I personally know a child in this community who was asked not to return to headstart due to his disruptive behavior. He did very poorly in kindergarten. He had to repeat the first grade. During the first month of his second year in first grade he was failing again and hated school. He was diagnosed with ADHD and started on medication. He finished first grade with the attendance award, math award, language arts award and "best student" award. He said to me "I was so happy I almost cried". He was obviously a very smart child. But even if you're the smartest person in the world it's of little value if you can't use it.

nope, public school Policy is the same district-wide. DD had the same policy at her schools in FL (2 different districts) and in WV. The same policy again in AR. How well it is received depends on the teacher. They are only human and of course you have some individuals that take such things as a personal attack on their beliefs

Thats why the government shouldn't get hold of education.

And Q9 you'd do great in most public schools. As I have pointed out and others have as well, schools vary widely because school districts are allowed to interpret rules according to local wishes. Most districts reflect their population pretty well. The problem is when they reflect the squeaky wheels and not the true majority. When that happens the true majority needs to step up and fix it.

Schools are not static institutions. They are reflections of the people and the times in which they exist. The grow and learn. They get things wrong and then usually swing around again as people protest.

THAT is what is the true beauty of this country. We get things wrong at all levels of our society all of the time. But, we are a self correcting system and we usually swing back toward stability and sanity before jetting off in yet another wrong direction!

There are LOTS of things wrong with this country right this minute. Truly. We're in some dire straits.

But, did you see the other day at the 9/11 memorial? The current sitting president was sitting next to the last president!!! WOW! Really truly think about how amazing and fragile that is!!!!

One person had power over this nation. Lots of power. He lost the election and he stepped down! He's not in prison, in exile or dead. He's sitting right next to the new guy holding the union together.

Don't you see what an amazing miracle that is?

This country is screwed up! I cannot stand our current president. Hated the last guy too. There. I said it. In writing. On a public forum and I am not afraid. Amazing.

This country is screwed up. But it is fixable. And we can fix it.

?? Government shouldn't be involved in education because teachers are human?

We could always go with robots, of course...

I'm not a obama or Bush fan either... both of them being quite possibly the worst we've ever had. But I don't think we've really had a truly good one since Calvin Coolidge. Never heard of him? Probably because he was a good president/man.
