I have WHAT in my yard? :

I hate to repeat myself but:

Societies swing like pendulums. Sanity is in the balance. The pendulum goes too far in one direction then too far the other way. There will ALWAYS be government going too far and government not going far enough.

Schools frequently make mistakes. They are made up of people who are often a mix of "professionals" and volunteers like school board members and PTOs. If YOUR school is doing something you don't like YOU join the PTO. The whole lot of people who complain about schools need to get off the computer and attend a PTO meeting. Quit blaming other people. Quit blaming the "government" which is an all-purpose word people don't even understand half the time. Look in the mirror.

This is your country. It has an awesome system BUT it only works if the people remain educated and involved.

Two years ago my non-christian daughter was cornered by some christian girls trying to save her soul by baptizing her against her will. The school stepped in a prevented the bullying and affirming my daughter's right to believe whatever she wishes to believe. This past year same daughter stands up to bullies to defend a mormon child who was being bullied for being different. You know what she said? She told them they were not behaving in a very Christ-like manner.

Freedom means freedom to worship as you wish. It also means freedom from other people telling you what and how to worship.

The whole lot of you need to g read the book The Way We Never Were about how the US has sanitized and romanticized the 50s into being something it was not......

I'd love to read the book - even though I already know that.

I agree with you on your statements about religion. But... if I said the 'whole lot of you need to go and read the book of proverbs in the bible'
What would that make me?
By the way who wrote that book? I love to read about history!
I'm counting the posts till this one gets shut down

I think this just recently got religion involved and I don't think the book has much to do with it. His book is more getting back on track to the OP's topic about life in the 50's vs life today.

Yes I agree just thinking that no matter if we all stand on our heads its probably not gonna change the way others think about the 50s vs 2011... its all just each of our own opinions. We all think different...

that's what makes the world go around! I just wish some peps wouldn't get so upset when others think different.

Go her!

Anyone notice that in the OP's post the only girl was a teacher...were there no girls in 1957? Or did the girls not get into trouble? Or were they just ignored?

It just seems interesting with something geared to the late 1950s, even as a metaphorical comparision, has no role for woman other than teacher.

Yeah, it seems people watch old movies, television shows from that time and think, why can't we be like that? We were never like that! Those shows were not based on reality, just what viewers wanted to see. Perfection in an in inperfect world. Like us today,we use television and movies to escape, not be a history book.

Oh come on now! The grass is always greener on the other side... or in our case 60 years ago! I even like the clothes styleback then more... but I do HATE wearing dresses...

I would never survive in a modern public school. My buddies and I regularly discuss firearms, criticize the government in... aggressive terminology, we openly talk about our faith, and we routinely point out flaws in other worldviews - including each others' and the tutors'. (We meet up every Tuesday and get the week's assignments, in addition to reading papers and holding debates and presentations.) I wonder what would happen if a student openly criticized the textbook on a subject in public school today, and then brought up external references to back up their point. I have done this several times, and it results in lively discussion. I'd bet money that's not the result in modern public schools.
