Yeah, the grass is greener, I would have loved to have been born in the 1800's and live on the prairie. But I and my party always die of cholera or scarlet fever in the computer game "The Oregon Trail" ,so perhaps its good i wasn't.

mom'sfolly :

Anyone notice that in the OP's post the only girl was a teacher...were there no girls in 1957? Or did the girls not get into trouble? Or were they just ignored?

It just seems interesting with something geared to the late 1950s, even as a metaphorical comparision, has no role for woman other than teacher.

You people really know how to sniff out a long-shot criticism, don't you? Consider that most of the actions mentioned even today would normally involve males - sure, you can find female hunters, but it's not exactly the norm. Also consider that it examined the same actions in 2011.

Once again, it appears that someone must point out that this is in reference to the paranoia in public schools nowadays, NOT in reference to race or culture. Stop being so sensitive - if you people would drop your obsession with "OMG minorities were mistreated," you'd be able to see the point that's being made. It's not saying "the 50s were all-around superior," it's saying, "people in 2011 act like paranoid idiots."

Well that all depends on the school you go to.
In some schools they wouldn't care. In other schools you may get a stern talking to about being rude or inappropriate discussion. In a few schools there may be an overreaction.

You can't typecast all schools based on a news stories about a very small number of schools.

You would survive just fine in modern public schools. To think nerds cant survive in today's schools is wrong, we had plenty of them.

Isn't it the truth! I've read a book written from diaries from woman on the Oregon trail. I can't believe how many lost their kids on that trial! I could never have done what they did. I would have stayed in the east!

Now I'm "you people"....I really wonder what that phrase means in this context.

I wasn't born in 1957, and I'm not in school now. I do however have kids in school now.

All kinds of discussions go on in schools even today. Any teacher would be thrilled with a student who had enough gumption to bring up contradictory material with valid citations. The proviso being that it is done in an appropriate and respectful manner. Shouting out in class that a textbook is utter nonsense and you can prove it would not win you friends in any schooling situation. My kid regularly discusses firearms, catapults, crossbows, fighter aircraft, tank specs etc. at school. He also checks out books on these subjects from the school library. He did however, get an in school suspension for taking live ammo to school.

Each era has it's pros and cons. When I put the pros and cons together and think about it, I'd have much rather lived in the 1700's - early 1900's. But, I'm in 2011 aren't I? So I'm going to make the best of it. We live in a corrupt world either way...

Because no one in the 1950's was paranoid about anything, ever.

Cold War, McCarthy, Communism, 'The Bomb', Racial Integration.
Every generation has it's paranoia. Every generation has it's idiots. Every generation has it's conspiracies.
And you know what? Most people turn out alright and the country keeps going.

In my children's school, these things are encouraged. The only rule is that the argument be carried on respectfully.
