Self Blue (Lavender) Silkie Thread

No, my buff girl isn't carrying a lav gene, but I will breed her offspring back to lav and should get some Isabel/Porcelain offspring. Everyone else, says the girl in pic #2 and #3 is a blue partridge. So, I'm content with that color

Forgive me for my ingnorance here. But if the offspring pictured you breed (with buff mom & lav Dad right ) are bred back to a lavender wouldn't you also get some pure lavenders?

The only genetics I have down pat are the BBS & Bowtie, NonBowtie showgirls. This lavender & buff genes still have me confused. Really wish I could take a class some place and really learn about genetics 101. Wish I would have paid more attention in HS.

Thanks

French Toast dont feel like you are the only one confused on all the genetic stuff....me too...I have about 3 Porcelain chicks from Catdance do you breed them back to buff or lavender to keep the color or do you breed them to each other and will they breed true....I think i might sell them in the fall as I have so many colors right now and my project pens are lavender and partridge....we also have white...blacks...blues...splashes...and the ever frustrating buff lol...but I like the color of Porcelain..oh well maybe someone will want that color....Chris..PS my French Toast whites are maturing nicely

Your correct, I will also get a portion of lavender offspring because the buff's offspring is carrying one lavender gene. If I'm not mistaken, you breed Porcelain to Porcelain, but will also get a portion of lavender from that breeding also.

I'll be corrected if I'm wrong.

He does seem happy with the girls !!!
Oh and I did put a buff hen in with them yesterday since I don't have a buff roo and I really don't want to or should I say don't have the room for another color. She is very nice type but does have some dark almost barred wing feathers and a bit of smutt (is that what they call it ) on her tail. But otherwise very nice crest, skull and nice toes and feathered feet. Just thought I would make his day. Now he has three ladies and they are all doing well. My blacks are very good layers however.
Any ideas on how to jump start them ????? I"m getting real anxious to get some split babies !!

I had him quaranteened (sp) in my bedroom (of all places) so I had my own private alarm clock !!!! Not sure what I'm going to name him yet. Sometimes I call him Sunny so ??????

yes they were throwing some sort of partridge when I used him with the buff lav splits and also throwing those greys i kept. I have no idea why except that a lot of people mixed other colors when working on lav and there must be a ressesive gene in there somewhere that did funky things when bred with the buff splits

a full buff would be good for him too breed offspringback to lav to see the results maybe PI

I do like picture #3 as well.

So are those throwing the partridge gene then ? but are lavender splits. Bred back to lavender would get you 100% lavender ?

Inquiring minds want to know !!

Thanks

I have the very same problem, although I am not hatching as many at a time, but my problem has been with just silkies, and the rare colors seem to be so fragile. I posted this problem on another silkie forum, and many other "newbies" or back yard enthusiests were having the same problems, but none of the more experienced breeders would step up and say they are having problems. I hope you find the solution, and will post your findings. I had been wondering the same thing, I move my eggs into a hatcher on day 18. I use a turner, if I just unplug the turner, can my eggs just hatch in the turner cups?

I hatched in the turner cups many hatches ago, not knowing any better, and it was very hard on the hatching chicks, they had nowhere to walk around. I wouldnt do it again, but I am starting to hatch in the same incubator too, I just take out the turner and put the live eggs in paper egg cartons at lockdown. hatches improved.

Darling Farms, some have improved hatchability rates by adding Manna Pro bird conditioner to their breeder's diets. Some have also had a bit better luck with using broodies rather than incubators. It was thought that the hatching problems were due to close relationships while getting the lavender color and improving type. But with so many continuing to have problems using splits it appears that might more at work here than just close relationships.

Thank you Darling Farms, I will try the egg cartons.
