September Hatch-a-long!

Pics
Well, 4 out of the 5 blue eggs have hatched out now, and I already moved those into my brooder. 2 of them have the NN's, and 2 have the fully feathered necks. I am going to keep the 2 that are the NN's, but will try to sell the other 2 locally. One of those fully feathered necked chicks is white, and the other one is sort of brownish-gray with a white spot on the back of it's head (so thinking the dark one will be a boy). These are from my White NN/Breese mix roo over my Crested Cream legbar hens, and any females will lay those light green eggs.

I have 2 of my tan egg's that are in the process of hatching now, and 7 more that I'm still waiting for to hatch. On these one's, I am hoping to get at least one clean necked NN chick.
My hatch on the 22nd should have some Nn chicks. I set some white leghorn eggs from hens that have been in with my Nn roo, oh and a few out of his Nn girls too

I get to try and hatch those out next spring, outta be fun at 4800 ft lol, gonna be doing a lot of studying between now and then as will be hatching those for my neighbor

You will be hatching NN's then? I really grew to like mine. They are a decent size, plus they lay eggs well! My roo is pretty mellow, too. He does everything that a roo should do as far as showing the girls where the food is, and he's not too rough on breeding them, neither.

no it didn't quote for some reason, my neighbor wants me to hatch turkey poults for her and I've never done those just chicken so it's gonna be a lot of studying before spring

Enjoy your upcoming experience. I'm just going to stick with my NN chickens in the future.

well mine we will see have an Ameracuana Rooster , the one in my avatar,on RIR hens, pretty sure the one chick that survived the last hatch is a rooster we will see, just starting to get some feathering in but stands up almost like it's dad from day one love my flock they are so people friendly but will be interesting to see what the offspring lay that is for sure and which combs they inherit.

The turkey poults won't be staying here just hatching em out in the incubator for the neighbor

Nothing hatching and I'm now at end of day 22, will be start of day 23 this afternoon. it is so hard to candle them as they are all blue / dark so hard to know what is going on. I have removed 2 rotten / leaking ones from under Doris the Slightly Dim silkie but she is still sitting on a few more but I have little help and I'm not sure I'm going to be able to find a replacement chick this late in the year. Not sure what to do - seems so cruel for her to have sat for 21 days (and almost a week before she got eggs) and end up with no chick, I dont' have a wire box to put her in either to try to break her but really loathe to do that anyway. Gutted :hit:hit:hit

Most of my chicks due in 9 hours are out now with a few more cracks/pips visible. They started pipping yesterday afternoon.
I moved my August chicks out to their coop last night with no heat. Five are two weeks old and two are 10 days old.

18 eggs made it to day 19. I just checked, there are 4 eggs pipping, 4 unpipped so that means 10 are out.
That is way better than I hoped for. Of the original 24 set, 13 of those had been sat on a long time by a broody hen that wasn't covering them all very well and eventually abandoned them. 2 of the 11 fresh eggs were removed as quitters/leakers. So obviously at least some of the sat on eggs either hatched or are pipping.
Hopefully by mid afternoon I can pull them all and find out how many of the eggs I almost didn't try to set actually made it. The main reason I tried is because they were beautiful intense reddish maroon eggs, just like the standard calls for. And the birds laying them are molting so I'm not getting any of them now.
If I can keep the predators at bay, I'm looking forward to some more of those eggs after winter solstice. I'll be putting a different cockerel with that flock by then. So it will be a mother son mating.
It's always good to keep extra roosters. I got down to 7 roosters earlier this summer. The 3 I was going to cull because of various flaws are the only roosters I have left so you just never know the future till it dumps on you.
