Love the poetry...that's great

My daughter talked to her science teacher about bringing in some chicks to show the class...turns out that's against the policy...can't bring in chickens or chicks. However, they are allowed to HATCH chicks

So my daughter offered up our fertile eggs and the teacher said YES! She is making a homemade incubator and wants all our different eggs...white, brown, blue, green. Allison is soooo excited! I'm sending the eggs to school with her next week. I don't know what she's doing with the chicks...she can send them back to us or keep them, whichever she prefers.

As for my little broody Sammie, she is doing great

No sign of losing interest, she's sitting tight. She has food and water available, but she's not eating much. I guess that's pretty normal. I've been putting some sunflower seeds and a little scratch right next to her for a treat...she reaches over and takes a few bites.

I'm thinking about candling the eggs tonight when it's dark out...she's been sitting on them since Sunday afternoon. Maybe we'll get to see some veining.

Yes they are! LOL

She isn't pooping in the nest, so I'm ok with putting it right next to her. If she were pooping in the box, I'd keep it at a distance.

I think if she can get through the weekend, hopefully we'll have it made. I keep reading it's at a week that they get up & walk away.

I will join you all as well... I am a 2nd grade teacher in Vail Colorado. I am doing this with my class.
We set 20 eggs on Monday the 5th. We are using the Brinsea Octagon 20
I ordered the eggs from McMurray..24 arrived, 4 were cracked/broken so I am hoping the other ones are okay. this is the 2nd time I have done this... last year our came from a local farmer and we had 10 chicks hatch our of 20 eggs)
Our temp has been pretty steady at 99.6-99.7 and the humidity has jumped around little between 21% one morning and then up to 51% but it seems to be staying around 40-45%% now...
Should I be doing anything else??
We will candle them on Monday the 12th ( I did try to do a few yesterday when I was adding water- could not see much, the air sack seemed to move a little around in the egg??) Is this normal
I am not feeling too good about these eggs since they were shipped and some arrived broken,
Thanks for your help

Happy Incubating

I want to join in! I set 42 eggs in my hovabator on 4/6. My rooster is a White Sex Linked (at least that's what they told me he was when I bought him as a chick), and my hens are all sorts: 5 RIR, 4 Black sex links, three Easter Eggers, and one Golden Comet.

About a week ago, I hatched 17 out of 17 eggs from my guys...my first hatch ever. They all were sold yesterday. Hoping for a good turnout this time around too!

Daniellenoel: If the aircell was moving that doesn't sound too good - sounds like your eggs had a rough time in shipping. I would candle at day 7 on your own and maybe have a back up plan of getting new eggs from someone local if there aren't many developing...would hate to see the kids disappointed
