She said/He said Who's right? Who's wrong? No one!

Took a week or so with the littles in a playpen in the run, a week just letting them out for s little while, and now their playpen is open and they can go in and out as they like, they still tend to nap in their safe house.
True, you do have to watch things closely at first, but after about 5 days they are mostly ignored. They have lots of hiding places in the run though, just in case.

I've been trying to come up with a way to fashion a "safe house" for them without having to go out and spend a lot of money. Today is the second day I have let them out of the brooding cages in the coop and sat in there to "protect them". I was hoping by a week they would be able to move around in the run without having the others attack them.

Right. Mine have been side by side for weeks. When I let them out, the younger ones run faster and the older ones give up faster. But if I combine the runs, they wouldn't have an escape. No size difference now, and no where to run! Lol

Right. Mine are still smaller (about the size of my Black Jap Bantams) so I can make a smaller opening in something where they could get safe. I just don't know what the something should be....lol

Hey!! I am not unstable!!

Yes. If it doesn't stay at/above 25% I add a wet sponge and that normally keeps it around 30% which is what seems to work best. I only go below 25% if I feel the air cells are bigger than I like and I ony do that near the end and only for a day usually.

You're welcome. :-)

I would add a sponge. I've heard different theories on what's "dangerously" low and I've heard people that incubate in that "dangerously low" range, so :hu   I'm honestly not comfortable with less than 25%, I make exceptions in that recommendation only when someone has not monitored their air cells and near the end finds them to be significantly small. Then I recommend running dry regardless and checking every 24 hours.

I'm trying to integrate my almost seven weekers in with my  16 week birds and they are not being too nice.  It might take a while. My almost 10 month roo is the only one that is really nice to them.

:duc

I checked the air cell and it seems small for day 12. Not much water loss since day 7 and humidity has been in the teens for close to a week. I added a sponge and now it's up to 30%.

Booted bantams mixed hybrid layers. Two of my biggest pens, but I don't know if I could sell them. Pretty attached...
I covered the tequila with "Ross got busted"

Cracka please :lau

Now why you beez getting awwwl ghetto up in hur?..... my best impression I guess!!!!!:lau :gig

Oh those were the other ones I meant to comment on how pretty they were when you posted pics! The black japs.
I think it was Ruby that posted a pic of a piece of wood with a small hole in it, mounted to the fence between the sets. The little ones can get thru it but the big ones can't. And it has a flap that can be totally closed. I loved the idea, but it wont work with mine now. You could maybe even make it with cardboard! Until it rains... Lol. But could be easily replaced. If you have a place for it.

You sure your hygrometer is accurate?

Yes! I saw that! I love that idea and would like to implement it in both my runs next spring.

xs 2. It's hard to believe the air cells would still be small running that low. Of course if the eggs themselves were thick shelled and less porous that would make a big difference too.

Byc it was pretty funny....I feel like both posts you saw were mine!!!

I promised DH we'd only have about a dozen chickens, so I'm only counting the winter chickens......
Those are really the only ones that you should count, right? All the rest are meant for the crock pot or to be some one else's lawn ornaments.

Can you make a run within the run, with small doors through the fencing. I like the plastic 1" chicken wire for that purpose. It's pretty cheap.

I'm not sure. It's the incutherm thermometer/hydrometer combo. Not sure to to check it without getting it wet and not sure if that will screw it up. :)
